Cam for 351

Hi Im purchasing an f-250 soon with a 351 and i want to know which cam would give me the best horsepower/torque for starts from idle to about 3-5000 rpm. You know jumpin the line, and off roading. Im not sure of the (type ie.Windsor).

We gotta know the year. It all depends on if you have the speed density system or the Mass Air Flow system. You're limited with what you can do with a speed density system because it can't react and adjust to an upgraded cam's overlap. You can get a cam with a little higher lift, but in terms of overlap, it will not run right.

Now if you have the Mass Air Flow system, by all means, throw whatever you want in there. You're limited to your own imagination.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but did any 351 equipped F-250's have MAF? I don't remember seeing it on my buddies 97...

So you need an SD safe cam then unless you also do a mass air conversion.
The Comp Cams 35-255-5 and Crane Cams 444232 are a couple good options(I have the latter). With long tube headers these will produce boat loads of torque from idle up!

Ok cool thanks, now about the mass air conversion what would that include. What would be involved. Is it the similar to my 94 f-150 system? Now I may seem really dumb to ask but i have not yet looked under the hood of this truck because the truck is for sale at the owners brothers house and his brother is never home and I was wondering is it goin to be carbruated or efi?
again its a 1989 F-250.

Thanks Jason

The Mass air conversion is a $700 kit sold by Ford that includes a new SEFI mustang computer, mass air meter and injector wiring harness. It's a plug and play install that converts the speed density bank fire system to a sequential mass air system. This opens the door to a bunch of performance mods as the mass air system is much more capable of adjusting to a modified engines needs in real time, versus the SD system. So you can install more radical cams, high flow heads and intakes, and so on.
The '89 will be EFI unless it has been changed by a previous owner.

dont bother with Mass air at this point just for a cam. if you want more out of a cam then those to conaski provided then you will need to get a custom cam made that will retain a lobe seperation of at least 114*. check out www.fordfuelinjection.com

If the transmission in that 89 is electronic, then a off-the-shelf mass air conversion will not work; the ECU can't run it.
If all you plan on doing is a cam swap, then there really is no need to do a mass air conversion for the type of cam you're looking for. However, if you're going to add more aftermarket parts to it later (heads, intakes etc...) then a conversion isn't a bad idea.

Maybe just maybe a tweecer? Which is a custom cumputer tuner. MAF for 5 speeds are much cheaper.

I have the same vehicle, 89 f-250. Would one of these cams along with headers improve the fuel economy at all. Right now it seems like it just doesn't have enough power to move all that weight efficently. I was hoping if it was making more torque it might help in the mpg area a little.

Yes. The more torque the motor builds down low the better milage you will get. I have seen 16+mpg HWY with my combination.

My previous truck, a regular cab '89 F150 4x4 also got milage boosts with longtubes and a free flowing exhaust on the stock 302.
