I Need a New Key

I just recently bought my 04 Expedition. When I purchased the vehicle, they only gave me one key. I need another key and would also like to purchase a third in the future. From what I have read, a second needs to be coded different than any keys past the first and second. Is this true. Is there a way I can program the key or does it have to be taken to a dealership.

I called a local ACE Hardware, they said they would be able to program the key, are they able to do it or can only Ford dealerships

They (and you) could program the new key if you had TWO old keys on a 03-05 Expy.

If you (or they) only have ONE old key, someone has to come up with a Ford specific scan tool to do the deed.

You dont need to get bent over at the dealer. I would buy the keys online (go ahead and get 2 if you want) and call a few locksmiths. I had a dude in a van code my keys for less than 50bux.

This is what I did. The mobile lock smith came to me and made the keys.

I bought a couple of blanks for my old Expedition and never had them cut. I think I am going to go to walmart and have them sell me a programmed cut key and see if he'll cut two more from my blanks.

If you are using blanks meant for a different year than what you have they may not work. I would check before having them cut.

You are correct. I bought them for my 98 and now intend to use them on my 2000. I'll double check that they use the same blank. I assume I can just have the key cutter look up both years and see if it calls for the same blank.
