Really struggling...Ford just called me and got a lot closer. I'd pay a little more for the Ford but the margin is down to $2K.
At this point, if you need to, go drive both again if you're still not sure.
Personally, don't let $2k stop you at this point.
If you still like both trucks, move on to evaluating the dealers (which needs to be done anyways).
If they haven't already offered, ask the sales person for Ford and GM if you can meet their heavy truck service manager.
If the guy doesn't want to waste his time to say HI and chat for a minute or two (I know they're busy), that would be part of the deciding factor for me.
For example, when I was done signing paperwork the sales lady said "Lets go over and meet [the guy's name], he's the heavy truck service manager."
Look at their shop. Do they repair for utility companies, etc. because in that case they have big contracts so they must be decent enough to get such contracts.
Just some things that come to mind in addition to what has already been discussed by everyone.
A lot of my decision was based on asking friends, people I know, people they know, etc. between our two local dealers.
Of course that was in addition to my poor feelings towards the dealer I didn't use anyways.
Even with smaller shops, you'll hear if they have good techs because some small dealers out there do have great master techs.
That link is the standard boilerplate language. It's not even from the diesel supplement. Notice where it talks about recommending "top tier gasoline"
huntidog,
Your motives here are very questionable based on your activity on specific threads.... And yes you seen a GM CP3 pump failure not covered under warrenty do to excessive water found in the fuel reported at RV.net.
OP,
There are actually some ex GM owners here including myself (I actually owned more GM trucks than Fords). When it came time to purchase a new truck I test drove the '12 models including Super Duty, RAM, and after looking at a Chevy's interior, overall looks, tin can sheet metal, def tank hanging low behind the front passenger tire, I had no interest in a test drive at that point.
Having said this go out test drive all three makes, compare prices and decide which one is the best fit for you.
I have it on good authority that this train has left the depot, the ship has sailed, the chicken has flown the coop and the sun has set...he has made his decision
One comment regarding FORD's warranty. I have never had a problem with FORD honoring their warranties since 2005. I have had several small items from replacing worn out seat covers to problems as large as a complete HP fuel system failure in one of my 6.4's causing damage to all the injectors, glow plugs and anything else it could destroy. FORD covered the repairs without question and I was on my way.

There is all the talk about guys saying the problems with the hpfp and warranty and etc.... Well #1 there are very, very few people on this entire website that had that problem with the hpfp but everyone talks about it like they had that problem I wouldn't worry about that its self because if it is gunna end up failing on the Ford it'll end up failing on the Chevy because its the same part. #2 of your worried about the warranty have the dealer throw in the 100k mile bumper to bumper warranty, you can usually talk them into that for free, then you really don't have to worry about it. And if Ford wont fix it get a hold of Bosch the maker of the pump. IMO from what I've seen, heard, driven, pulled etc. I'd take the Ford they out sell Dodge and Chevy 3-1 for a reason

I really don't care if you question my motives or not.
I did not make any recommendations to the OP one way or the other. I really don't care what he buys...I do think that he deserves accurate info when trying to make his decision.
Posting a link to the gas engine manual is not really relavent at all...I bet the Ford gas engine manual has very similar wording....So what?
The OP is wanting a diesel. I hope that he is happy with whatever he buys.
And the pump in both the 2011-12 Ford and the GM is a CP4 NOT a CP3.
How about a link to a GM failed CP4 that had a warranty denied?
I am only correcting what I see as misinformation when I see it.
There definantly is no question about your motives.
I too had a lengthy reply prepared the other day and got some sort of error message when I tried to upload it.
Bottom line: I looked at all three when trading my beloved Excursion. I liked the over-all "look" of the GMC and the engine and transmission pairing are great. The Ram has a huge rep with a proven engine but is - after - all - MOPAR. The Ford had more room in the back for the kids and Mastiff as well as better towing mirrors. Engine and trans combo appear to be a winner but remains to be seen.
The bottom line came down to the Ford having bigger room in the back seat area; GREAT towing mirrors and the fact that they are NOT Government owned and didn't cut all sorts of shaky deals with the government in support of Union(s). I'm not turning this into a Union-bashing thread but it factored into my decision.
As someone stated earlier, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the big three. Drive all of them, inform yourself as to the + & - and then make your pick.
Thanks guys, made my decision and I've bought the GMC Denali 2500HD. I take delivery on Friday as they are installing options that I requested including the towing mirrors. It was difficult and with as many problems as I've had with my 2004 I feel like I'm losing a family member. Its only money right...if the GMC thing doesn't work out for me I'll be back to Ford and cursing about my GM fiasco for another 20 years.

Congrats on your choice.
Be sure to post some pix. I'm sure Tom won't mind.
