clutch life?

hey guys i replaced my clutch in my 99 f350 7.3 about 3-4 yrs ago maybe 20k to 30k miles (guessing cause odometer doesnt work) and it has already started slipping again. what should i expect from a clutch? i sure thought id get more than that out of it. what do yall think? is there anything that could be causing it to slip other than being wore out?

i really like my truck but i dont know if i want to crawl under it and pull the tranny every couple yrs.

thanks for the advice guys!

Should last more than that. My stock clutch lasted about 100,000 when it was damaged by leaking fuel down the back of the block. Actually I was able to burn the fuel off the clutch, but the grease in the throw out bearing got dissolved and started making noise. My second clutch was a LUK and it lasted about 150,000 miles. It just failed at that point.

Did you leak any oil or fuel in the valley of the engine?

one more thing. last time i tore it down i discovered the input bearing was getting pretty sloppy. since the cost to repair was almost as much as a new tranny i decided to run it til it stops. you can hear a slight rumble at idle but its not that bad and it hasnt gotten any worse. do yall think this could be causing premature wear on the clutch?

My stock clutch lasted about 212k miles before it started to slip. It's replacement hasn't started to slip yet at 423k miles, but I wouldn't be surprised if it starts slipping soon. My truck seems to be pretty consistent.

Not sure. Tell me this, does your shifter move back and forth if you're driving and getting on and off the throttle? Almost like bad motor mounts? I had a fair amount of that play in mine which went away after I put a BRAND NEW transmission in. The trans I took out had virtually no play in the input shaft, but it did in the pilot bushing. The pilot bushing had oversized itself over the years allowing the input to wiggle around in the front which I surmise caused a chain reaction through the gear set to the shifter itself. Just curious there.

As far as the slippage, do you really have anything to lose by trying to heat it up good and hot- to the point of "burnage" where you can smell it? I figured after I had wet my disk with fuel I was going to replace the clutch if I couldn't fix it so I went to the local steep hill and proceeded to burn my clutch!

I think I did like 11 semi hard launches in a row on the steepest portion of the hill. Windows down and when you smell the clutch good and hot then drive it home and let it cool. Go for a drive later and see if you've burned off any oil that might be on there. It worked for me. 2 weeks later the throwout failed I suspect due to the fuel washing the lube out of it?? Anyway you don't really have anything to lose by burning it a little at this point.

Chris when my truck grows up it wants to be like yours!

aually the pilot bushing was kinda shot out last time i had it down and i replaced it. i figured the slop from the input shaftmust have worn it out. but again it still drove fine. no noises no movement in the tranny.

one thing i thought was weird was that the about a week after i first noticed it to start slipping i had to tow my tractor to the hunt club.(about 14k for 50 miles and some pretty good hills.) it never slipped once on that trip. but immediately afterwards it started slipping again. its been driveable but when im in OD the throttle wont even move the truck now.

so you think i may have something on it huh? ill have to see if i can see anything on it. imight try to burn it some and see if it gets any bettr.sounds like those clutches should last a long time.
