After 150,000 miles mostly towing my 4500# work trailer It's time for a new clutch. Throw out bearing making too much noise and worried pilot bearing may be going as well. I Have only a chip and intake so I don't need a high HP clutch. Was thinking Valair. Do they come with the kevlar bushing or do I get that from somewhere else? Anyone have good suggestion for clutch? Southbend seems a little steep and I'm pretty broke.
There are several choices out there. I too had to replace mine, but it detonated at 125k miles. i wet with a southbend clutch with the first power rating over stock, since i dont have many motor mods. Which ever clutch you choose there are a few things that you will want to think about doing.
Make sure you get the kevlar throw out bearing. Also if your truck is a 99-01 replace the clutch fork with one from ford made for the 2002+ trannys. it is a much stronger design. Also i know it adds a little bit to the cost, but consider changing out all the hydraulics for the clutch. It will be money well spent in preventative maintenance. I have put over 40k on my new clutch and it was worth it to have the piece of mind.
A comparison of the Valeo clutch VS a LUK.
The Valeo is the factory OE supplier.
The LUK in my truck was a POS that bunny hopped every time I tried to engage it in reverse.
Also I'm not a big fan of that Kevlar bushing.
Look what mine did after only two years of service.
Loosened up and fell right out.
My clutch came with the kevlar bearing. The fork is available at some places on here, and through the dealership. Its pretty cheap. I think it was only about 30 dollars or so when i did my clutch 2 years ago.
-Hey Kwik,
How many miles and what kind of use are on that kevlar bearing? I remember when i did mine, everyone was swearing by them. But thats not too good looking.
I don't care for the Kevlar bushing. I have seen a few in the shape of the one Dan had. But I would change the fork as Chris suggested if your's is the old style and here is why. Broken Fork picture by Eddie__S - Photobucket
I did not change it out the first time and had to pull the tranny back out to change it a couple month's after getting the new clutch. The new fork was about $35-40 at the dealer IIRC. And yes I had to replace the hydraulics soon after also.
Thats exactly what what happened to me. Except I had the shop replace it with the new clutch, and they didnt actually do the work. Then about 2 weeks later it finally gave up.

I would take a guess at 20-30k miles. Not really a good track record.
I thought it would last forever myself and was very surprised to see it fall out of the flywheel when I removed the clutch.
I have a South bend and it dosnt like reverse. I took it to a shop and the mechanic says it just feels like a heavy duty clutch... i have yet had the time to talk to south bend about it.

I can change the hydraulics without removing the tranny right? The slave is outside I thought. So I could do it later if I had to.
Thanks all, ordered the clutch. Be here next Tuesdayish, will have to see how my work week plays out before the install. Keep you posted. Shout out to Duffy @ Yellowbird Cab in Winston Salem who is letting me use his lift and tranny jack.
