6.2L trans 'stumbles' when in gear

Hi There,
Wondering if anyone else's drive train does this?
It doesn't happen often, maybe 6 times total in the past 6-8 months, but sometimes, I start the truck, put it in gear and start driving, and then the tranny sort of loses it's mind, and drops out of any gear for a second, then slams back into gear. It's weird, and I have seen the same thing in my 2014 F150 with the same trans.
Thoughts? Fluid levels are perfect, no burnt smell or bad colour to the fluid, and 99.8% of the time it runs and shifts perfectly...
It seems like the truck simply forgets that it's in gear and has to kind of shake it's head to get back on track.
Any thoughts or insights would be greatly appreciated!

What shift are you getting this 2-3?

Driving very slow and little pressure on the drive line, I quite often have a harsh 2-3 shift and get a clunk from the rear pinion/u-joint.

This has happened to me only about 5 times in over 4 years (truck is a 2012). It has done it with the stock tune as well as the 5 star tune(s), and only did it immediately after a fuel fill up.

It is like it stumbled, fell on its face, then found a gear (clunk) and went on with no problem. Again, rare and hardly ever.

Weird........

My 2011 is doing this too. Only once in a blue moon. Most often after its already been ran and then sits for a bit, like after fueling up and then pulling out. Or longer sits too, like up to a couple few hours but still having already been ran in the day. When it does it, it happens only once and will usually catch me offgaurd. Then I'm watchful for a bit but it may not happen again for weeks or a month even, or it might happen the next day?

Exactly - just like squisher - mine just falls out of ANY gear and then recovers after a second or two. I do run a 5 star tune, the 'performance' one for the 6.2L. I tried the towing one but prefer the performance...however my F150 is bone stock. It's the 6 cyl with the same 6 spd tranny as my 350, so I'm pretty sure it's not the tune, but rather a symptom of some deeper issue with the ECM control of the shift points. Trouble is it's so random, and only happens once in a row when it does happen, so I can;t even wait till it happens and then go to a dealer and say - "See?".

Mine has done it also. I have found that if I coast/slow down to make a turn then immediately apply throttle it will do it. Its like the tranny didn't have time to complete the shift.

I bought a 2011 in 2015 which did this. Took it in had the transmission programming updated. Problem solved.

Thanks for chiming in. I wonder how that works with custom tuning? Most here reporting this problem seem to be custom tuned and report it happening with the factory tune or custom tunes? I am custom tuned too and have been loathe to return to the factory tuning because 1. It sucks and 2. I'm cat deleted so will have a near constant check engine light for cat under threshold.

To update the trans tuning at the dealer, will that all just be overwritten when custom tunes are applied again? And if so how come custom tunes from different 'tuners' are causing the same symptom? My custom tune I run is written by a company in Alberta Canada, light speed innovations.

Also same as others my fluid is fresh, right up to level and unburnt?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? If I don't see some action on this soon, I'm going to scalp some of these posts together into a new thread in the 'super duty' section.

Thanks for any info/ideas.

Im no tuning expert, and I'm going out on a limb here and putting myself out there to look like a fool, but....

I think the update is for the software. It's kinda like when we get these updates for our iPhones, you do the update, and when your phone comes back up, all your settings are still the same. I think you guys can get effective software updates while running your tunes. I would definitely put the factory tune back in before going to the dealer for the update. That way when you load your tune back up you get the updated factory tune stored just incase I'm wrong. Surely there is someone in this section that can prove me right, or wrong.

Yah. I'm following what you're saying there. If that's the way it works then I'll definetly take it in, returned to stock like you say.

I may just stop in at the dealer and see if I can talk to someone about it. I'm loathe to turn my truck over to anyone.
