I am not aware of any diesel pickup ever having 1 battery...
Maybe those little import ones?

I think thats a little steep, but it's not a job I'd want to do either.

I be leave all 8 cylinder diesels have two batteries and they all have (had) the option of two alternators.

Yes too much! Firestones policy is to charge a 100% mark up on all parts.

Exactly. Firestone has a lot of commercial and fleet accounts due to their amount of locations. Makes it easier for big corporations to handle repairs and maintenance on company vehicles.

My alternator just went out on my 08 F250 with, you got it!1, 2 batteries. The alternator was 397.00 at the stealership. I called parts houses but no one made an aftermarket one. The parts house priced it 30.00 cheaper and said it was a factory order option only, but couldnt get one. So I had to get it from Ford. Putting it on myself in the morning. The core was 75.00 so all in all + tax came out to 518.02. So youre right in the ballpark.

I'd be tempted to take it off and have it rebuilt, most major metropolitan areas have electric motor rebuilders, probably cheaper, may even be better than new. Guess we'll cross that bridge when it happens, if it happens.

Late responding but just went through this couple of months ago. I have the dual batt AND dual alt installed. Primary alt had a problem. $500! Could not find one locally and had to order. It was fun to change.
