Thinking about getting the roku2 xd or xs. Any pros/cons? I could then stream hulu and netflix. Different options? Are the shows on hulu delayed? Not crazy about losing AMC so I might keep cable for that reason.
Thanks for input,,
I've also been looking at those but I don't know enough about the different boxes to decide what I need/want. The only thing that's really holding me back from buying one is the $$$.
My buddy has a Roku XD and loves it. He cancelled his cable service and uses Hulu and Netflix. I'm not exactly sure when the new shows get added though.
Terry, from what I gather from website is Roku XD or XS is high def and is only about $60 for the box then you pay per month for hulu plus, netflix and vudu. Just dont know how much and if shows are in real time. I stream netflix now through X-Box but thats in game room.
Randy, If you see your buddy kinda pry a little info from him/her. Thanks
I ordered the XS unit through Best Buy a week or so back (had a bunch of reward points, got it for next to nothing). The differences between the XD and XS are minimal (XS has motion control for games, free Angry Birds game, Ethernet port and USB port) but I wanted the LAN connection the XS offers, so I got that one.
My shipment was passed off from UPS to the postal service, so who knows when it'll get here. I'll report back once I get it setup.
I had my XS and XD mixed up, edited my post (I got the XS). Anyways, look what showed up today, will hook it up tonight and mess around with it (plus I'm halfway through the 2nd season of Arrested Development on Netflix, anxious to see how the playback is).
After using this a couple days, to me, it's worth the money. I have so many devices connected to our wifi that sometimes we end up with conflicting IP's, etc so running a lan line was easiest. Setup was easy, video quality is nice, and the box itself is so small (fits in the palm of your hand) that it doesn't take up much room. The unit is always on so switching sources and firing up a channel takes no time at all. It does require an account setup on Roku (w/ a credit card) but the setup was quick. I haven't tried the games, and most likely won't, got enough other stuff to play games on.
One things I'm kinda PO'ed about is that Comcast blocks HBOgo on the Roku unit, so it's unavailable for me. Alot of other channels out there though.
All of this troubles me in a way - we are investing in artificial realities - if you think about it.
AND they are highly vulnerable to electromag interference. A solar flare of great magnitude for example...
I wonder what all of our "INFORMATION SYSTEMS" will be worth, should a major power loss take place?
It is a concern that I have puzzled over for several years - how can we preserve everything we have learned in a way that can be understood by our descendants?
A "TIME CAPSULE" that includes everything we know...

At this point in our techno-development, we have a lot.
But it COULD all be lost or ruined, leaving everyone in another "DARK AGE"
~it bothers me....
Especially with the increased reliance on electronic records.
CONSIDER THIS CAREFULLY: Without electricity - ALL OF THAT can vanish without a trace...
I will not buy a Roku because of their radio commercials here. "Go ahead and watch that latest reality show, let that other person invent xxxxxx". I know TV is kinda pointless to begin with, but a company that advertises it's products as anti-productive and for the couch potatoes won't get my money.
I have a Sony blu-ray player since it had wireless connectivity for Netflix. No pay tv service here.

What should we do?
Really?!?!?! Who cares what it's worth! When the sh__ hits the fan, I grab my family and my guns and head to my camp.
Until then, I'm going to enjoy life and not worry about "electromag interferences" and "solar flares".. I'm pretty sure our descendants aren't going to care about a Roku unit, because that's what this thread is about. You get the prize for best thread hijack.. Here you go:
I bought a new wireless flatscreen for kitchen so now I can stream netflix and am still waiting for hulu plus via roku.
Only problem is I have to wait untill the 25th, wifes present,,
