I just picked up a 09' F150 XLT 4x4 w/ 5.4L Triton. I've been digging trying to find good performance mods for this engine but I can't seem to find any data on it, ie: HP and TQ numbers with mods. I was looking at Stainless Works thermal coated long tubes & true duals w/ high flow cats, custom intake (since all the ones on the market look like a ****ty stock one), and a custom tune. I plan on doing exhaust first. Then the intake and tune at the same time, but later down the road.
What is the best programmer to go with? I've used SCT and Diablo on my Cobra's and favor the SCT but I'm sure the F150's have other, possibly better, chip companies.
So what kind of numbers would be looking at with these mods? Is there any other company that offers long tubes for the 5.4L 09' 4x4?
Well really to be honest I can't say how much power you'll get with the exhaust/intake/tune combo probably just guessing +10-30 hp +10-50ft\lb torque maybe?
For real power you'll have to go big and get a supercharger.
I figure the 5.4 with it's lincoln log manifolds would gain much more than that. They look quite restricted from intake to exhaust. Are the heads really that bad or are these things running stupid low compression? I was hoping for 450tq range with a 91 tune.
So who makes good cams and does head work for these engines? All I know is I'm not adding a blower or turbo to a non-forged engine, and I don't plan on building it.
Shows some hp numbers with headers, exhaust, intake and their tune. 5 star probably has the best tuning for gas engines. Looks like they added just over a 100ft/lb
Exhaust and intake mods won't give you jack other than noise without forced induction. Save the money. Get a good tuner and you'll be happy. Or go with a supercharger and keep the boost at a reasonable level. There are not a lot of aftermarket options for the 5.4 as far as heads, but you may try calling Summit or Jegs. I know there are a lot of options for the 4.6, and many of the parts (heads, cams, etc) may interchange.
Sadly you guys are right. I've spent this past weekend looking this stuff up and approximate gains for any 5.4 Triton is 30hp-50tq with full bolt on's and tune. On the up side, these numbers are to the wheels and the hp and tq curves are very smooth vs. stock being choppy as hell. So I'm going to go ahead with the headers and exhaust then tune it later with 5 star's tune.
Thanks for all the replies and the reference to 5star for tuning.
I'm looking at 325+ hp with my 87 tow/performance tune, I think I can live with that Not sure what tq is but just the shifting alone was worth it for me. Mike is a great guy to deal with, I haven't heard anyone say anything negative. Customer service is top notch. Keep us updated on your progress, I'm getting itchy as its been awhile since I did anything for the truck
