Hello,
I am new to the forum and find it quite helpful. I recently purchased a 2002
Escape 4x4 with a 3.0 V6 with a bad transmission with hopes of learning something about Fords. My question is when I put the Escape into gear there is absolutely no response regardless of which gear it in. It acts like it is basically in neutral other than when in park. I have had other transmissions go bad and always had some slipping or other response from the vehicle. Could there be a sensor or relay out that is not sending a message to the transmission or could it be possible that every gear is out? Thanks for any advice.
Tomw thanks for the response. I checked the level of fluid level and it was at the proper height, but it badly failed the smell test. I took some new fluid and compared the two and it certainly has a strong burnt smell and look. Strong indication that it is cooked. Doing research on these transmissions(CD4E), the only way to change the filter is to drop the transmission and split the case. Wonder what the engineers where thinking? Thanks again.
The transmission has failed internally, probably either a pump failure or the input shaft has sheared. Try the shift lever in manual 2nd to bypass all electronics and test. If it fails, stick a fork in the transmission.
The CD4E has been used for twenty years with a non-serviceable filter. It's the least of your worries.
I just had to have the transmission in my wife's '05 Escape rebuilt. Only 92k miles. The torque converter let go.
After $2000 dollars, it is back on the road.
The guy who rebuilt the transmission said that he has been doing quite a few of them recently. I'm a pretty sure that design of transmission was junk from the factory.
I am a novice mechanic. What do you exactly mean by manual 2nd?
I ran through all the gears R D 2 &1 and there is absolutely no response in any gear. Thanks for the help.
Thanks for the information. Now that the transmission is toast my next question concerns a possible replacement. I have found a 2004 Escape transmission, same engine and also a 4x4, with low mileage. I have been getting conflicting answers from transmission shops whether this will work in my 2002. Has anyone put a 2004 transmission in a 2002? Thanks for any help.
You can ask a boneyard. They have access to the years that will match, as they provide used parts that must work or they go out of business. A site that lets you look for parts is car-parts, and you can enter year/make/model/engine/trans/ etc and search. The results will list the 'donor' vehicle vintage and in a lot of cases, mileage, plus price and distance.
