I tried to post this in the inline 6 area and no response. I have just picked up a 79 f250 with a 300 4.9 and a 4 speed manual. My question is will someone go out and measure there two dipstick tubes or tell me a site to by new ones. I have one tube in the rear that is taped up and one in the front that shows no fluid. I just changed the oil and and the new dipstick (from a new 300) I got from the junk yard is too long for both tubes. I think the tube in the back is the oil and the tube is snapped in half and the tube in the front is tranny fluid and its empty ( the one in the front goes in the engine so i find it hard to believe its transmission fluid but the new dipstick pulled oil out of the rear tube so that must be oil and the front is tranny) RiGHt?
Please help this is my winter rusty but trusty and I want to restore it. It runs good, great to me for being 33 yrs old. Better than newer cars but I can't find new tubes anywhere that are oem
Junkyards man those inline 6s are everywhere. I beleive the rear would be tranny front oil. If the rear looks like oil might want to flush that trans ans throw a new filter while your at it.

Manual transmissions do not have a dipstick/tube, only used with automatic transmission.
Dudes got a 4 speed no dipstick their. Is say its had a motor swap at some point & he now has a 4x4 pan on a 2wd motor or the other way around.
So I just did a oil change before I started driving the truck. So the oil is good. I'll have to really look at the color the rear tube pulls out. When I put the new longer stick in the front it bottoms out quickly but doesn't have any fluid on it. So the rear must be the oil and the front is a "would be" transmission fluid. How does one check the tranny fluid or fill it. I'll also check the contacts about the new oil tube.
I'm think gpence is on to something with your oil pan. Maybe swapped on your block at some point. I have a factory original 300 435NP 4spd in my 78 4x4 and it has a single dipstick as NumberDummy noted. I attached a couple of pics for you.
You can see the single dipstick located behind the oil filter in the first.
Here's a shot of my oil pan when I dropped it to clean and paint it.

Congrats on the new dent and hope this helps.
Thanks guys! I think we've figured it out. 78f150tx is there a min/max on that dipstick? The one that is in my front tube is short and says something about SE101- oil or something which is another reason I thought oil may go in the front but the dipstick looks short enough that it prob belongs in the back. It's def shorter than the dipstick I just picked up from a newer 300 from the junk yard. Another reason I thought my rear tube was broke in half. but its located by the oil filter like yours.
I just got a new oil pan in the mail yesterday with a gasket set and it looks a little different from yours but not too much. You don't by chance know how long that dipstick is do you? I would upload pics but I dont know how on this forum. But it looks the same as yours but with another dipstick between the 2nd and third spark plug wire. tx again guys
Yeah my 390 is out of a car so I have the front dipstick now & will have to plug it if & when I get around to putting on the 4x4 pan. Lol.
That's the only reason it popped into my mind. That & I haven't ever had a 4speed in a dent that had a dipstick in it
it all makes sense now. Ill have to verify the dipstick in the front fits in the back and I will plug the front one. I havent worked on old cars in a long time so its all new to me. but Im glad I got this one to work on
agreed gowild0706, nothing beats old iron Unfortunately can't get you that dipstick measurement now but it sounds like you've got it figured out. My dent is back home in Texas. Killing me. Counting the days until the end of the year when I'll be back working and driving old clifford. Good Luck and keep us posted on the progress.

Will do. Id go out now and look at it but it just got really cold and snowy here in Minneapolis MN so itll wait till tomorrow. I have a gasket set for the engine and plans to strip the truck down and sand blast the frame and build from there so Im sure ill be on here alot. I think it needs a name, now its my rusty but trusty...lol

Impossible! Since the transmission is located behind the engine, there is no dipstick/tube in an engine for any transmission.
NO manual transmission of any kind has a dipstick/tube. Only automatic transmissions have a dipstick/tube. Manual transmissions have a plug in their cases to add fluid.
See post 4 for the correct engine oil dipstick and tube for your application. I had to list both 2WD & 4WD, because you failed to say which your truck is.

We figured it all out. I must of had a engine or tranny swap cause the there is two dipstick tubes and the one in the rear is actually short, not snapped in half like I thought. I learned alot just trying to figure this out. I wanted to do a transmission flush soon too and now, for the most part, know how to go about doing it. Thanks again for everyones help
I am hoping someone who has posted on this forum can help my with my oil pan replacement. I have a 1979 F150 300 I6 4x4. My pan was pretty dented up, rsuting, and leaking oil like crazy. I bought a new oil pan from Dorman and noticed afterwards there wasn't a hole for my dipstick and its housing. Do i need to take both the oil pan and housing to a mechanic to have it pressed in? Or can I drill out a hole for the dipstick, grind the rivets off, and replace it this way?
