I have a '58 ford f-100 with a '57 grill. What parts aside from the grill do i need to swap a '58 grill into her? Does anyone know where I can locate these parts? Would a 60's ford 3 speed work inplace of the 3 speed I have now?
Thanks,
Jack

Jack,
The front fenders are the same on '57/'58 so the grille should be a pure bolt in. A pre '65 tranny ( car or truck ) will bolt in place but you will have to shorten the driveshaft if you use a car tranny as the tailhousing is a lot longer. A '63/'64 toploader ( T & C ) 3 speed tranny from behind a V-8 is strong and is full synchro ( also has a little higher geared 1st and 2nd gear ). Del
Thank you for the information, it will help me in my quest to make the truck great daily driver. Do I need to change the headlight doors? I think that the '58 has quad headlights. If anyone in the SoCal area has a pre '65, 3 or 4 speed truck tranny for sale let me know.
If you can find an entire '57 front clip with decent fenders, it could be easier to swap the whole clip than to swap the grille. There's a ton of bolts holding the grille in place, and some of them are a nightmare to remove once they're rusted. Unless bolts don't rust in California?
I love this site because I always get good advice. I think that I will start looking around for a whole front clip, this sounds like more then a week end job to me. Thanks so much for you help in this, guys.
I'm parting an entire 1958 F-600. It has a real good grill and related parts. Let me know if you are interested and I can some photos to you. Thanks, Mark emilyjoy@ponyexpress.net
I cannot thank you enough for your support, and help. This is what sets this website apart from the rest of them. I have had my situation change. I need to save every penny that I can, as we are trying to close on a house. Thanks for all of the help. When things settle down again and I can get back to the truck I will let you guys know.
daverunge, I have a 60 that needs a front grill, if you find what your looking for on your 57, I'd be happy to talk about taking that 60 grill of your hands!
I think I counted 28 give or take bolts to get the front grill apart, at least 4 of them are easy to get to! sheesh makes you wonder how they were assembled originally!
thanks
Brian
It's easier to work on the front clip if it's upside down, or with the grill facing down. The fun part is when the nuts are seized and spin in the clips. Someplaces I can grab them with visegrips and then twist the heads off, or cut away the bolt head, but up near the top corner access is really tight Then it's time for a thin hacksaw blade to cut between the fender and grille. Maybe a super long drill bit would reach in there?
