my 04 exploder is showing 0300, 0316, 0402. replaced plugs, wires, plenum gasket. what is my next move. sorry for my format, typing on cell phone while in a moving ambulance.
random missfire normally means multiple cylinders. So something they have in common. I assume you have 1 or 2 coils for multilple cylinders ? ONe may be weak.
I'd start by looking in to the source of the P0402. Fixing that could fix the random misfire codes.
Per the factory service manual, the following are likely causes of the P0402 diagnostic code:
EGR valve stuck open
Plugged EGR vacuum regulator solenoid vent
Plugged EGR tube
Slow responding D.P.F. EGR sensor
Damaged DPF EGR sensor
Improper vacuum hose connection
Plugged vacuum hoses
EGRVR circuit shorted to ground
Damaged EGR vacuum regulator solenoid
Damaged PCM
Keep in mind that the DPFE sensors have been common issues on several models of Fords. Also keep in mind that, depending on which engine your Explorer has, intake manifold gaskets have also been a common issue and could explain random misfires.
the dpfe (differential pressure feedback snsr). is not inside the egr. I'm don't know your layout but it should be on the LH front side on engine possible on the air intake with 2 hoses connected to it. It will be about a inch wide by about 2 inches long and 1/4 in thick beinging held by 2 bolts, one on ither side. The link will take you to pictures of 2 different setups for it (side and bottom ports). https://www.google.com/search?q=2004...&ved=0CLQBELMY
