so the truck starts fine in the morning. but if i drive it, turn it off and then try to restart it, it cranks really slow. like the battery is dead or timing is too high. i checked base timing and it was 8-10 degrees advanced at idle. it cranks fine when it is cold, so i dont think it is the battery. what could it be. dont want to leave myself stranded waiting for the truck to cool off.
My van did that after being rebuilt. I assumed it was tight and fresh... it'll get better.
It was a poor starter plus the heat from the new headers- was stock ci manifolds.
All that combined....
Will/can advance auto etc. do an amp draw check?
My starter is new, but might be laying down on me when it gets hot. I would like to go to a newer mini starter, but i want to get my headers installed first to make sure i have enough room. For now, i will try to just replace the one I have under warranty and hope that helps the situation.
backing the timing off helps hot starts. if it never pings, youre not overly advanced, so might want to get adjustable vacuum advance so you can leave it retarded for easy starting, but advances back to normal once started... pull the coil power next time, see if its timing causing the slow cranking...if it cranks ok with no spark, need to figure out advance.
carbon deposits/hotspots can do it too, might think of seafoaming it or something...
I had this issue. What I did to fix it was change both battery cables to 2 guage from 4 guage and clean the terminals on the sellenoid. My cables were all jacked up anyways so it was needed.
Thanks for all the help guys. I bought new 4 gauge ground cables to make sure i had a good ground. I would have bought bigger but that is what the parts store had. I will try the coil wire the next time I have a problem. That is a great idea.
