I have a 85 F150 inline 6. Problem is when driving between 0-60 the temp seems to run normal ( needle is between the o & r on the gage). At 70 the temp rises.(needle is at the m on the gage) I have also noticed the when the oil pressure runs high the temp is high, and when the oil pressure is low the temp is low. Is this gage problem? Thinking about putting new gages in, I know where the oil sending unit is but cant locate the temp sending unit. Strange problem. Can anyone help? It hasn't over heated as of yet and I have no leaks. Just dont want to be stranded on the highway.
The temp sending unit is right next to the thermostat housing. Just follow your upper radiator hose and where it connects to the engine there should be a sensor there.
Temperature and oil pressure move with RPM, they don't affect one another. You might just want to flush the system really well, give it some new coolant and see how it behaves.
I looked around the thermostat housing and didn't see it there maybe I just over looked it. Is this the normal operating range for the temperature? Thanks for your reply.
Bronco guy, the temp sending unit is actually at the rear of the block on the passenger side, below the exhaust manifold. The sending unit at the thermostat housing is for the EEC.
I would do the raidiator flush since it sounds like the problem to me. He could also have a problem with the voltage regulator on the back of the instrument cluster since he describes the problem occurring with more than one guage.
Ok, so it's been a while since I've seen a 6... So I'd listen to Bern!
Before installing guages, do the flush. Also, your truck should run at about the temperature your thermostat opens + maybe 10 or so. So if you have a 190 degree thermostat, it should run somewhere between 190 and 200...
Thanks to both of you. Ive been searching for info on this for awhile, with no luck. I think I have come to the right place. I'll try the flush first and see how it goes. Again thanks.
If you have two or more gauges varying your problem lies in the gauge voltage regulator which is located behind the cluster.Remove the cluster and you will see a small regulator attached to the printed circuit. About twenty bucks at your local Ford dealer.
I want to thank everyone for there help. I ended up and put a new gage in the truck, and so far the temp is running steady. Right around 180 to 190, not all over the place like before. thanks again for all the great help
