Transmission Trouble - Engine Lugs
My E99 F250 158k miles, has developed a problem in the tranny. Several times when placed in reverse, the engine will lug as if the torque converter was locked. It has also done this in drive. Otherwise it seems to operate nomally. I took it to a trans guy and he has determined that the front pump is bad and is bypassing fluid between worm channel into the converter channel and causing it to lock. He has recommended a complete overhaul. One... Does a bad pump seem like a reasonable cause? Two.. would it make any sense to replace just the pump (and maybe converter), as opposed to a complete overhaul. Tranny otherwise is working well. Dont tow a lot with it, occasionally a bobcat of a travel trailer.

From my experience talking with quite a few tranny shops (take yours to a diesel specific shop) when mine went out any time something with the tranny goes it's best to rebuild the entire thing.
If nothing else you'll have the peace of mind of that warranty.

So, today it continued to lug the motor in 1st and reverse. A new sound appeared however. A few times, when placed into reverse, it will lug the motor for about 2-3 seconds and then a slight pop and the idle returns to normal. Any possibility this could be the loose filter phenomenon. I have considered checking into this. If I do is there a recommended filter brand? Should I get one from the dealer or is it ok to get one at "national" parts store? How much fluid will it take, approximately?
