Did 1971/73F100/350'shave this kind of steering wheel as an option? Standard equipment, there was no optional steering wheel.
In other words, is my steering wheel factory stock?
It's just that I came across some pictures of other stock '72 F250's that had a much older looking steering wheel...I'm curious now How do you know they were "stock" since you weren't aware (until now) that this steering wheel is "stock?"
1974: Ford obsoleted the colored (black/blue/green/red/tan) steering wheels used 1971/73, replaced them with the black steering wheel used 1974/77 for use as service part replacements:
D4TZ-3600-A .. Steering Wheel-Black / 1974/77 F100/350 & 1975/77 Econoline (except with 1975/77's with Speed Control), 1974/77 Bronco.
*1961-1970 steering wheels were either 3 spoke (17") or 4 spoke (18") depending on 2WD or 4WD or if F350's. 3 spoke wheels used a horn button (Standard Cabs) or horn ring (Custom Cabs, 1965/70 Rangers).
4 spoke wheels (1961/66 F100/250 4WD & 1961/69 F350) used a horn button.
1970 F100/350's (excepting the "egg crate" plastic grille inserts), look exactly the same as 1971/72 F100/350's, that use different plastic grille inserts.
But, 1970's have a THREE spoke steering wheel, while 1971/72's have a TWO spoke steering wheel.
Mr. Wilson always provides spot in info. Your steering wheel is the smaller diameter one that replaced the larger diameter three-spoke stock wheel. A marked improvement, especially after you reach a certain age and Mother Nature conspires to increase your girth and keep your belly pushed up against that three-spoke wheel.
Well I shouldn't have assumed anything about the other steering wheels, sorry about that. I don't know much and to me my plastic steering wheel seemed to be out-of-place next to the chrome/metal dash. At least I learned something! =) Thanks guys
First a tiller, then wood steering wheels, next hard rubber steering wheels that were replaced by plastic in the 1940's.
Whiz over to the Portland swap meet next April, it's located at the expo center next to the Columbia River.
You'll see all sorts of vehicles with all sorts of steering wheels, including the steel types with projections...that could double as lethal weapons in a gang fight.
First vehicle with a steering wheel: 1903 Packard.
