Hi, im a first time poster, long time looker. usually i can just search through the topics find someone with the same problem and done. this time i couldnt find anyone with the same symptoms. someone please help me out.
here's whats going on my 2000 f150 with a 4.6 and just about 200,000 miles stumbled for a minute then died, no engine light came on. It wanted to restart and almost did a couple time's but no go. which leads me to beleive it has spark. after about a 30min cooldown it started and ran fine like nothing ever happened. Got me home. then the next day same thing died and started after it cooled. Has done this a few time's. I had put a cheap O'riely fuel pump in it a couple years ago. but i hear if you run your gas tank low on gas alot(which i do) the pump can get hot and you can toast it. Does anyone think the fuel pump is the issue or could i have another problem.
And BTW in the past year I have cleaned the EGR port's on the throttle body, put a new egr valve, and fuel filter. And i checked the fuel pressure to had 40 . someone please help point me in the right direction
My '97 is in the shop right now with the same general problem. It's been a re-occurring problem all summer. I have tried a lot of the same things you have, along with cleaning the MAF sensor, new oxygen sensors, checking for vacuum leaks, etc. All with no luck. It died on me 3 times yesterday on a 4 mile trip to the grocery store, so I called a shop and had it towed. Oh, I also bought an O'reilly fuel pump... about 2 years ago, and run my tank low a lot. I do get codes for lean fuel on both banks when it happens, and the system goes into an open loop fault. Hopefully, I will find out something this morning and let you know what he found with mine. If you come up with an answer, I would appreciate some input.
OK, I bought a new fuel pump, and couldn't believe how much better it ran than it did when it ran "good" before. I have only driven it the 2 miles or so home from the shop, so I'm not for sure that it won't stall after a while. I do suspect that the fuel pump was the problem I have been having. I do know for certain that I won't let the gas tank get below 1/4 tank anymore.
Thats great sounds like problem solved. I borrowed a fuel pressure tester and drove around with it till it died hooked it up and sure enough no pressure. So i pulled the tank this moring and replaced the pump. What fun! Seems to be running fine now, put 65miles on it today. Thanks for your replies.
I'm on my third fuel pump, myself. The first replacement, a carquest part, did not last as long as the original, so the last time I replaced it, I paid the extra and put in a Bosh pump, it's SO much quieter, and It's already outlasted the carquest part.
Pulling the tank is a bitch. After doing it a few times, I started thinking how much easier this would have been if Ford had just given us an access panel in the bed. But then these are the same people that gave us a 4 hour spark plug change.
