heated seats issue

Trying to figure out the problem with the heated seats in my 2003 expedition. Just bought the truck from a private party & he said it was supposedly some $1,500 module that needed to be replaced. Any body have any experience with these that can point me in the direction to start looking like relays or wireing? At the moment when u push the button the light comes on for a couple seconds & goes out then won't work again till u shut the vehicle off & back on again. Thanks

Could be either the fan unit or the control module. If it is the module, it is a $300-ish part available only from Ford. I've had both go out on me at different times. Does it work in cooling mode?

No it does the same thing in cooling mode. Where is the module located & is that something I can swap out myself?

It is under the seat I think. I have done the fan but not the module, the dealer got me on that one.

Most likely you need a need heater element. There is one for the seat bottom and one for the seat back. Most likely it is not the control module which actually more expensive. Dorman products makes OEM style heater elements and if you search the net, Ebay, or Amazon you may find Ford OEM (I just found some for my '03 F-150).

Do a search on this site for instructions on how to replace the elements or I can post what I have later on. Basically it involves removing the seat from the vehicle, separating the seat back from the bottom, removing the seat bottom upholstery (the seat back you can slide the element in without removing the upholstert) and reassembling. The only special tool you'll need is an inexpensive set of hog ring pliers and some hog rings.

The first time I did one it took about 2 hours, and the one I did last weekend took about 1/2 that time but I spent more time cleaning the carpet under the seat and lubricating the seat tracks, etc.

Should cost you less that 125.00 for each seat.

It isn't the heater element because it doesn't work in either heat or cool mode.

I didn't see anything about cooled seats but you can start troubleshooting by unplugging the seat elements from the module and ohm them out to see if there's any resistance with power off. With power on, check voltage from module to narrow it down.

Starting in 03 the seats are different. They come with heating and cooling, and the heat is not a wire grid in the cushion, it is an element in the module. The heating and cooling is forced air. If the cooling doesn't work, no amount of pinning out the heat will help, I'm going to guess it is likely the fan. In post 3 he responded to my question about the cooling not working either. You can swap the fan from the passenger side to check it - it is only four screws and two zip ties to get it out. I have done mine from underneath without taking the seat out, run it forward and up and you can get at it.
