There are some non cyanide copper plating baths and white or black nickle is pretty safe. I'd have to research cadmium I've never used it. Biggest problem would be the power supply needed and the size of the baths to do large pieces would make it expensive and take up a lot of room. Small pieces that could fit in a gallon bath would be about the largest practical size for a home shop, but would still require a fair amount of dedicated space.
Aaron is right, unless you clear coated it copper would oxidize almost immediately.
I'm sure you can find ample information on the internet from plating coins with a brush plating setup and dry cell battery power supply to adapting a battery charger, to small commercial power supplies costing from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. The higher the quality of the power supply the better the plating is likely to be.

Hey AX, I used a home cad plate kit for years and years and it worked great with a 12 volt battery pack and constant current charger. But I dumped my tanks (3 plastic tubs) and quit useing it when I found out the hard way that doing any sort of cad work without "proper protective gear' is a bad, bad thing. I ended up pretty much pegging the scales for heavy metal during a routine flight physical (cadmium).
I had noticed that when I was working in the shop when I was running the plater over in the corner that I would get a metalic taste in my mouth but never thought it was bad,,, it is!
I highly recommend that if you want to do cad work,,,buy the protective suit and forced air system first, then put the damm thing in another out building and away from where you do your normal work, Cadmium never, ever bleeds out of your system.
