The truck only has 72,000 miles. Every seal/gasket needs replaced. Rear main is leaking good. Oil pan gasket leaks. I think the head gaskets need replaced. Exhaust manifold leaks on the right side. I replaced the valve cover gaskets already. I replaced the intake manifold gasket a few months back but I think there is a small leak at the rear of it........anyway you see what I'm getting at.
I was thinking of just pulling out the motor and replacing all the seals/gaskets and re-installing the motor. Cheapest option.
I've had people say since I'm pulling the motor why don't I rebuild it or replace it with a reman.
Do you guys think with only 72,000 in needs rebuilt or replaced? Or would pulling motor and replacing seals/gaskets be fine?
I would pull the engine ,replace all gaskets, seal and fix any small repairs. May not need a rebuild or replacement . Some guys with extra cash may just do more and that's fine , i don't unless it needs it. I pull my engines in the vehicals i keep around for years, about every three years if they start leaking oil. If the are burning it then i rebuild them. Some engines on older cars, which is all i keep around, do have the seals and gaskets dry out and start leaking. They do that just because they are not being driven enough. You can check the cylinders after pulling the heads and the lower end with the pan off. So I say , just do what makes you feel comfortable and can afford .
351M at 72,000 and I have it out for gaskets .... I'ld pull a couple rod caps and main caps and have a look at the bearings and if worn .... I'ld replace them then along with a new oil pump. Do them one at a time. I did same laying on my back, if the engine is out on a stand .... easier.
2x... get a complete overhaul engine gasket kit and freshen it up. Btw, some gaskets are not available individually.
On the heads, it's not a bad idea to have them cleaned up with new seals and guides.
..while you're there, do a port/gasket match to the first inch of the intake and exhaust ports. A porting kit is only about $30, only takes a few hours, and worth some extra HP. Clean up the coolant passages cuz they're prolly crudded up.

Talked it over with my buddy who will be helping with the project. After it's out I'll see what she looks like when I get the heads and pan off.
HIO Silver could you explain a little more the part I highlighted in red.
Leave the combustion chamber alone if you're not experienced. Again, you want to smooth and blend the ports to the gasket - not hog it out.. more of a clean up than anything else.
