I need to change all the gaskets in my 78 inline 300 six. It has been sitting a while and leaks lots of oil. I want it too be in near perfect running condition before I do any serious work with it. Can any of you guys give me an idea of how hard it would be to replace the major gaskets in the engine? I am a little new at this kind of stuff, so it would have to be pretty simple to do for me to tackle it myself. Anyway, thanks for the info in advance.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 23-Sep-02 AT 05:13 PM (EST)]*All* of the gaskets? Sure sounds like a lot of work to me... I know things dry up when they sit but 300's are pretty stout. For starters if you don't feel like doing the oil pan gasket on your back under the truck then the motor has to come out. Sure you don't just want to clean things up and replace only the ones that are leaking? Some Simple Green or Greased Lightning and judicious use of a water hose and some baggies could save you a lot of work and get you where you want to be. Just a suggestion... Otherwise it'd would be like a rebuild less disassembling the rotating assembly. Some guys can do it in a weekend, others of us take a while.
Thanks for the advice. I didn't really know how big a job it would be. I think the ones leaking are the valve cover, and maybe where the cylinder head is bolted to the block, I am not sure. There is a lot of oil and it is hard to tell. Would just those two be very dificult? Thanks again for the advice. I almost got myself into a mess
I had a '79 Mercury Zephyr with an I6 and never did get that thing to stop leaking oil from the valve cover.... If it was me I'd change that valve cover gasket (and maybe the warped? valve cover too) just after a steam cleaning and see if it stays clean. You'll see any leak right away on a sqeaky clean engine and be able to get a positive trace on it's source. If the engine is running ok then there's not much likelihood that oil is coming from the head/block joint.
Thanks for the advice. I will probably try that. Do you know where I could get a new valve cover for a straight six and a gasket? If I am going to get a new valve cover I would probably dress it up a little. Anyway, thanks again.
A new valve cover hmmm... I'd say Ford is going be the best option? Try http://www.fivestarford.com/newsite/parts/ They're very good and very helpful. I'm not real sure about anything like a chrome one if that's what you mean since I haven't looked for anything like that There seems to be a dearth of aftermarket products for the 6... You may want to ask over at www.fordsix.com , they have a board dedicated to the inlines sixes and someone is bound to have asked about dressing one up.
Hi, If you are interested in a chrome clifford valve cover, oil filler tube extension, breather cap, gasket, 4 long cover reinforcements and a breather gromet ( its a long story of how I have them)I have them very reasonable. They are all new, but the valve cover has one breather baffle removed and one was flattened to clear the rocker arms on a 90 -300 , it still didn't fit.The flattened baffle could be heated and reshaped or removed and another baffled gromet could be installed. No dents in the cover was never on the engine. I was told by Clifford the cover would fit a 1990. It has the same shape as the 90 cover but isn't high enough to clear the second generation rocker arms as they are larger than the pre 86 or so half ball pivot arms which are smaller. There are at the auto parts store baffled rubber gromets that can be used in place of the missing metal ones ,the baffels prevent oil in the form of a liquid from being sucked through the pvc valve and the vent hose to the air filter , if you have a vent hose. The valve cover has two 1 1/4 holes, one for an oil filler tube and the other for a pcv valve or whatever.
