Electronic Climate Control cutting off?

All,

I'm sure this is something a few of you have already experienced. I have a 2005 EX Eddie Bauer. In the past week the climate control system has acted funny twice. Once on startup it did not turn on and once while driving it just turned off - as in digital readout is blank and the unit acting as if it has no power. It seems to "fix" itself...

Just wondering if there are any thoughts on what I should prepare for - bad unit or something else?

Thanks!

Jarhead

It's a sign the head unit is on it's way out. Sometimes they hang on for quite a while though. In the meantime, when it goes dark, cycle the headlight switch. That usually brings it back to life.

I had this happen once during our first road trip in our new to us 2005 Limited Ex. Reading the forums indicated this is a bug when the headlight switch is in the Auto setting; which mine was. Don't use the Auto setting and the problem goes away; as mine has. I also read that this is NOT a problem with the 'head unit;' in other words, if you put a new one, it will do the same thing with the headlight switch set on Auto.

Thanks guys. Very interesting about the headlight switch...

I do keep my lights set to automatic so I'll set them to manual - hope I remember to turn them on

Thanks again for the help guys. Already in a "have to replace" situation for an oil cooler and EGR. Glad to hear I don't have an immediate need to replace the head unit now too. I could live without AC in Ohio - but can't ask my kids to freeze in the winter (although the rear heat still worked.. Ok.. I didn't want to freeze

Cycle headlight switch when needed

Mine has done this every once in a long while, I turn off the headlight switch and turn it back to auto and all is well. Probably happened 8 to 10 times in 8 years. No worries!

Back in 07, my display would go dark on occasion, and I never use auto HL's. After a few months of that, zone control stopped working. Dealer replaced the HU, and haven't had any problems since. New unit has never gone dark.

I've asked the question here a couple times:
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...-gremlins.html

I've given up and found that as long as I keep the headlight switch off "Auto", the problem goes away.
