First Ford, First Diesel, First Excursion

Hello,

Lots of firsts for me here, so I'm really behind on the curve.

I picked up a 2001 with 227k miles. Already replaced tires, shocks and did some AC work on top of a basic tuneup. Added a chip and the beast runs like a champ. Really wish I knew about this truck sooner. Don't think I will buy another GM truck again.

It didn't come with a third row seat and would like to get one for kids. So I'm curious if any of the third row seats where ever made with the Anchor Latch system to hold down the kids seats?

I'm trying to stay focused on one task at a time because there is so many cool ideas on this site.

Thanks in advance for any tips/advice/ideas.

Congrats on the new to you rig, these really are an amazing design and its a shame Ford only made them for 5 years. I have always liked the EX from day one but for some reason never bought one. Until my Dodge Cummins was wrecked by a Bus. I have owned mine since February of 2012 and absolutely love it.

Not sure on the answer to your question about child seats for the 3rd row, might some info in the owners manual on the subject.

One improvement many make is the swapping of the leaf springs to Super Duty springs from F250/F350, greatly improves stability and does not make the EX ride harsh at all, some would say better because it wont bounce off the bump stops as much on the front axle, but like you said, many great ideas and improvements and best to stay focused

Best of luck with your new EX and post some pictures when you get a chance

welcome to the site!

you will likely never buy GM again!! lol

post some pics. im not sure about the third row seat with the anchor latch for a kids seat, but i see third row seats on ebay all the time. could possibly even find one locally at a junkyard or craigslist.

if you dont mind me asking, how much did you pay for your excursion?

Yes, there are 3rd row seats all over for sale. The stitching pattern on yours would be unique to 2000/01, but you could certainly put a newer seat in there and it would work fine. You can also put '98-'02 Navigator/Expedition 3rd row seats in there too- they all use the same base.

I don't know for sure because I've never used it, but I think the third row seats have little tabs of some sort on the back of the seat that I think are considered for LATCH. The second row bench have similar tabs if I remember correctly.

Here is a seemingly unrelated thread that wandered off into a discussion of adding a third row seat where they wasn't one originally.
https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1...questions.html

Here is a place you can actually buy the seat
suv 3rd seats,3rd row seats,replacement seats,Expedition

Now just need to figure out how to anchor it, are the slots and rods in the frame and you just need to cut them out? That I don't know.

Tousley Ford who is a FTE sponsor has the seats an it appears the seat belt assemblies as well.

Hope this helps.

Manual doesn't have any info on that, I did a google search and didn't come up with anything.

Yea, the Ex has a much better quality than my 07 Ext and 09 Burb.

The friend of mine sold it to me. He moved out of state and let me have it for a great price. It needed a lot of work though. I'm about 4k into it already. Had a bunch of little odds and ends on top of the other stuff I mentioned.

Sorry Sammie, i should of said earlier that the previous owner lost track of the seats somewhere. Seatbelts are hanging and seem to work when i tug on them and cut outs are in the floor. I've found alot of third row seats on Craigslist, but none have Latch. Appreciate the knowledge nonetheless

I'll make note of the leaf springs, thanks.

No latch until 03 from what I have seen. Although my 01 windstar had latch anchors.

The latch system is nice it is a lot easier to get a solid install, however if you take your time and use the clips you can get the same results from a seat belt. Take your time do the job right and keep the kids safe. Don't trust these companies that install them for you from what I've seen they do a poor job. I'm lucky to be out of that stage now.

Well i did a lot of goggle searching and no Ex or F250 was ever built with Latch. Found a few sites confirming and complaining about no Latch in 2012 f250.

thought I would share my results.

Hmmmm I was positive the 03 I drove had them. Maybe a Canada/USA thing?

I have the same ex even with the milage. I too bought it cheap and made lots of repairs. Feel free to contact me with questions. I used a chain coupler to make a "latch" type setup for my ex.

Check out craigslist for the seats. I see them on there now and then.

I wouldn't doubt there is two versions just because Laws differ from country to country.

thanks for the offer, i'll keep that in mind when i get stuck on something. right now i'm going to get the third row seats, new seatbelt for the 2nd row center, a front bumper and HIDs before the year is over.

I think you might be right. Recall something to the effect that canada mandated the latch system earlier than the US. Could be wrong.

As it turns out I just bought an 03 Ex, picking it up on Saturday so I'll check it out and report back.

Due to the GVW the Excursion was exempt from requiring LATCH, just like the pickups...so Ford didn't bother taking the extra step.

Here's some source info and ideas on where to attach the LATCH equipment if desired.
Upgrade 2005 Ford Excursion to LATCH? - Car Seat.Org - Carseat, Vehicle & Child Passenger Safety Community Forums

Edit: In the link provided, post #5 is right...LATCH isn't the safest option, it's just easier and safe enough. The seatbelt-through method is best but a PITA.

Tinman. I read that article, didn't notice any help on how to add Latch. I really appreciate you taking the time to do a search and look for something to help a complete stranger. But unless its made by Ford I'm not that interested.

I don't want to put the lives of my children behind some backyard modification just to make it easier on putting a chair in and out fast. I'll take my time to install the seat properly, if I'm late to something then oh well. Heck, the whole reason I buy big American trucks is for my kids.

Enough of my rant, appreciate the kind welcomes and advice
