89 E250 Computer damaged by heater leak

Hi,
I ran Ford vans as daily drivers for 12 years with great results some years ago. I had several different vans ranging from years 76 to 84. An 89 F250 with the 5.8 came up for $600 that looks good, 80k miles and has a light camper conversion. The woman is selling( after much expense fixing brakes, tires etc.) because she says her mechanic told her the heater core is leaking on the computer and causing it to stall out -she showed me the estimate. It started and ran fine when I checked it but I could smell the antifreeze in the blower air. Has anyone had this problem? What exactly does the computer on an 89 do? Is it an involved process to replace the core and maybe the computer? Any advise is appreciated.
