I've got a 05 f-250 that started smoking bad! Took it to dealer, they changed 2 injectors . Now only smokes at idle and take off when warm. They say will take time for exaust to dry out ! But hasn't ! Sorry for repeat thread but coundnt find a fix! Thanks for any help!
White smoke usually means you are leaking coolant into one of the cylinders. Also, there will be white smoke on a cold start up but that quits once the motor is warm.
Raw diesel can cause white smoke as well. Could be that or coolant. Are you loosing coolant? Any other symptoms such as rough running/missing? I noticed you have a SCII. What are your EOT/ECT deltas?
I will say mine was belching white smoke at takeoff. It would always do it when cold and do it intermittently when warm. Turned out to be a bad IPR valve that was diagnosed after it quit functioning and the truck shut down with no restart.
just had same issue with mine, turned out to be egr cooler went. egr is activaeded at idle and undeer throttle. took mine out and welded cooler shut on both ends, replaced oil cooler at same time ( while you are there it is good preventitve matenance). no more white amoke and truck runs great.
If your exhaust smells sweet it is coolant. If it burn your eyes and smells like fuel, its fuel. Most likely cause for fuel would be leaky injector. For coolant would be EGR or head gaskets.
I used my stock cooler & welded up both ends. by doing this the egr valve remains in place ( vs a delete that would then throw a code). I received all my help from this forum under how to replace egr cooler. Everyone here has been a tremendous help and helped me step by step though the job. As for a big job, you can do it in a weekend. Also look up how to replace oil cooler and turbo. It will give you all the torque specks needed. While you are at it get new intake manifold gaskets just to be safe.
And if you're going to tackle the job... I just happen to have a spare set of intake manifold gaskets, turbo mount kit, and oil cooler for an '03 6.0L I bought brand new and didn't end up using. If you're able to confirm that the '03 parts will work on your '05, I can cut you a good deal on them... The turbo mount kit is the only one I'm pretty sure isn't cross compatible with an '03. Not sure on the intake manifold gaskets; pretty sure the oil cooler is, though. Shoot me a PM if you'd like a price on them.
1/2 way through o4 ford switched from a round cooler to a square one, go to builtproofdiesel.com they will show how to tell which one you have by the VIN.
