Alright brothers (and sisters), I need your opinion. My boss is thinking of selling his 02 limited ex with a 7.3. It is just shy of 400k miles. The last 100k or so has been towing heavy (12,000 to 14,000lbs). this truck is mostly hightway miles. Oil has been religiously changed every 5,000 miles, and had to have the oil cooler replaced in it around the 100k mile mark as it failed and pumped oil into the coolant (luckily not the other way around). Wheel bearings were replaced recently as well. Other than the oil cooler and a few alternators, starters, and batteries, everything on the truck is what was on it from the factory.
Last I checked, it has 4 codes set. 1 for glow plug #3, 1 for the GPCM not communicating, 1 for IPR not controllable (fairly sure on this one), and 1 for something with the waste gate (fail steady state?) I think the last 2 are from the superchips programmer that is on the truck.
If I were to buy it, I would need to replace the trans soon as it is starting to slip. I think it would also be wise to replace the injectors as well, and I believe the fuel bowl is leaking as well.
So the questions I have are, what do you think this truck is worth, and if I were to buy it (its a possibility), what else do you think I should do to it?
Okay, here's my two cents... The codes are all fixable for pretty cheap. Glow plugs are easy, as is the GPCM... I know for a fact these trucks are beasts but at 400 plus you might be asking for trouble. Not saying it's not worth looking into but if it's gonna be you DD then I'm pretty sure you can do better. Although I don't know the price yet so how would I know anything here... Forget what I said and do what you want.
There was one locally with 350k on it and they were asking $3500. A few months back there was another locally with just about 400k at $4200. I'm in PA and by locally I mean NY NJ PA as that is where I look when looking.
Is this X clean like it has only 50k miles or is it rough like it has been used on construction sites and no one ever cleaned off their muddy boots or equipment?
Its clean and very well taken care of, I'm usually the one that cleans it. As far as I know, theres only 1 dent where he accidentally jack-knifed a trailer too much. I just got done washing and polishing it the other day, shines like its brand new (its black by the way). He drives it easy, never mashes it and he tries to keep it under 3k rpm, and doesnt use the cruise control when pulling trailers to keep it from downshifting and winding up real tight.
He figured it'd be worth 8500, i figured 10k just cuz its a 7.3 and lots of people are scared to even touch the 6.0's, but obviously i've completely lost my mind this week.
