$3,000 to $4,000 seems a fair price, especially if you believe the Tranny is suspect. A new/Reman. heavy duty Tranny will run up to 5k easily. The 7.3 is tough as a stump, however it is a widely accepted fact that these motors will need a major overhaul/rebuild as they approach the 500K, 600k miles mark. This is assuming the truck was well taken care of with the recommended fluid & maintenance intervals. How are the balljoints, HPOP & valve covers? All 8 glow plugs & 8 injectors may need R & R as well. Approaching 400k, the motor will have internal parts that are reaching their life cycle. Good Luck

I agree. $4,000 doesn't even come close to buying this truck. KBB private party in fair (lowest) condition shows over $10,000.

This discussion thread is right on track then. We historically and repeatedly tell everybody that asks us questions in these forums that Excursions have no value nowadays. And as I have said before, all we are doing is shooting ourselves in the foot.

At least the seller of the Excursion being discussed in this thread knows what his Excursion is worth.

I have told people when I thought the price was too high but only when it was THOUSANDS more than any guide shows like that other thread. This is the first one I've seen where people are saying the price should be 1/2 to 1/3 of what any guide shows.

KBB is a guide only and not the holy grail of car pricing. What all of this should boil down to for the OP is assumption of risk. 400k is on high end of spectrum for mileage 7.3 or not. And for last 100k miles it has been towing more than trucks rated capacity. Drivetrain and structure has seen a lot of use bottom line. Are you prepared to assume potential financial liability of parts/repair on all items large and small associated with 400k miles?

I'm sorry but the guides take into account the "assumption of risk" with the higher miles and they still say it's worth ~$10,000. And even if they are off some, they aren't going to be off by half or even more like is being suggested here.

I wonder what the members here would say it is worth if it was their own personal X?

I am looking at a 2000 X that has 138k miles and he is asking $16K. I couldnt see paying $6k less for something that has 3 times the miles. Granted you know the history and owner which could give you some piece of mind. Its only worth what your willing to pay. looks really good for having 400K miles. I know if it was me I couldnt justify pay 8-10k because if things started to go bad I dont know if i could pay to fix them. I could do suspension, wheel bearings, and what not but if the engine was to go out i could pay for the repairs.

I'm sorry but it's a "guide" and nothing more. Vary the mileage and price changes very little in kbb.

I don't care if it does lower the value of my excursion but no 11+ year old suv is worth the ridiculous prices people think they are worth. I paid $6k for mine and wouldn't even consider paying more. There will always be others for a reasonable price, ALWAYS.

KBB is worthless and is way off on this. BLACK BOOK AVERAGE WHOLESALE VALUE for a 2002 Ex Limited 7.3 4x4 with anything over 230,000 miles is $4700. Average Black Book Retail for a 2002 Ex Limited 7.3, with anything over 230,000 miles is $7000. They dont even give "clean" values for anything with that mileage. I am assuming that 362k mile Ex that sold at auction for $6900 was VERY clean.

That same truck with a V10 books out at a little more than half that price. On top of that, anything with a 7.3 will sell a lot easier and quicker than something with a V10 or 6.0.

This.

Plus...fiddle with the mileage on KBB. There's always a maximum deduction on mileage. Once you pass a certain point it doesn't reduce the price further...thus not truly reflecting an accurate value considering the risk involved in a seriously high-mileage vehicle.

Just picked up an 03 7.3 with just over a third of that mileage for 10k. I consider I got a reasonable deal but not that great that I can out another 250k miles on it and get my money back.

KBB is a loose reference at best. The only ones that will preach it is dealers, and at that only if it is to their advantage.
