1976 F100 steering problems

As most old trucks, my f100 had a lot of slack in it when i bought it. I have since replaced most everything in the front end. the front end is tight, it has a new steering box (put on before i bought it) that the mechanic adjusted, and has had the front end aligned.....what else can be causing the slack? the tire store said it was probably in the steering sector???? anybody have a clue?

2wd or 4wd would probably help most folks.

Give us the full picture... what hazn't been replaced?

With the steering box, the term "rebuilt" means the builder slapped on a new seal and it doesn't leak anymore. I suggest putting a pal behind the wheel while you look at the component interfaces to visually verify that everything moves in unison.... Meaning, input equals output.

Ch the rag joint or little u joint in the steering shaft which ever you have one, how are you radious arm bushings and your trac bar bushings?

Bergson makes a semi bolt in replacement complete from where the column comes outa the fire wall to the input shaft on the box, and they are well worth the money. The little u joint is not replaceable as far as I know.

Steering wheel splines good?

Steering stabilizer good?

I'll ask again- What has not been replaced on the front end and steering system?

Uh-oh..... your mechanic isn't the same guy who allegedly rebuilt the engine, right?

I was just about to reply about that...the trac bar bushing on the frame end is causing the problems...it has all brand new bushings in it but still wobbles around....any suggestions?

Sounds like the mount bracket bolt holes are worn/wallered out, you can weld some thick washers on each side of the bracket and use a thicker and longer bolt.

Also ck the bolt for grooves being worn in it.....

1976: First year 4WD's came with a steel/rubber steering coupler (rag joint). Rag joint attaches one piece lower steering shaft and coupler assy to input shaft of steering box.

1975: Last year for replaceable U-joint located in 4WD's lower steering shaft and coupler assy. Lower steering shaft attaches to input shaft of steering box with a clamp & thru bolt.

Is there any other way to fix this without welding washers to the bracket? Or do they make a replacement bracket? Welding washers on seems kinda sketchy...

You might check your pitman arm. I've seen a worn out pitman arm be sloppy on a brand new gearbox. Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you watch the pitman
