Quest for a T-86
My boys (3 and 5 years old) and I have acquired a 64 F100 in fairly good shape except for some rust through on the firewall and cowl vent and a really bad paint job. Mechanically it has received a complete brake job, a rebuilt carb (of the correct type), new fuel pump (of the correct type), various cooling system parts with a complete flush, and a valve adjustment. She is running well.
Currently, it is at the paint shop being media blasted and painted. The bed is being removed and painted on the bottom and body color matching spay-in-bed liner for the top. All new weather stripping and body seals are being installed.
The original 3 speed overdrive transmission has been replaced with non-OD. Now I am on a quest to find an OD transmission and return it to its original state. Based on other post I will need a 53-63 T-86 or a 64 T-85 with a square bolt pattern, is this correct? Also, the 56 and later versions are 12 volts and the earlier versions may be 6 volt.
What would be involved in using a T-86 from a car? Would fabricating a rear transmission mount and drive shaft be all that was needed? I have found two from cars and zero from trucks.
64 still used the rectangular pattern for three speeds.
You need a truck unit. you may need to buy two or three to make on good one. Took me 2 full transmissions and R11s to make one good one. Do not believe anyone selling one that it is tight or good. It will need a rebuild as most never checked the OD unit for gear oil and burned them up. This is probably why the standard 3 speed is in the truck now.
Post the trans letter or number from the warranty plate.

The plan is to have the transmission rebuilt and install it with a new clutch. As you suggest, I expect to have to collect several transmissions to make a good one. The scavenger hunt is part of the fun. My boys have fell in love with the truck, and my wife has even taken a liking to it. The truck will always be part of the family so this is a personal investment.
Any suggestions on how to tell if a T-86 is operable or worth collecting for parts would be appreciated.
