My 64 292 originally came with a 3spd OD and it has been replaced with a light duty 3 speed manual from a 62 Ford Galaxie. CL in Houston has a 3spd OD listed and I suspect it is from a car. Will a T86 OD from a car bolt up to a truck 292. Is there a way to tell if the engine was swapped when the trans was changed?
I have asked the question before on the differences between the car and truck T86 but despite 1 hour of searching I can not find the post. I have a slip yoke on the current transmission so from that stand point a T86 from a car might save getting a drive shaft. A local shop can make custom drive shaft to fit anything if either version will bolt to the motor.
Mac, Some facts, your truck is 50 years old, 292 is correct for the 64, if a T86 will bolt to your Y block engine it can be made to work in your truck. You need to be sure that all parts are there and you have access to replacements before you start. I believe some are electric controlled from that era. It aint a pretty thang in 2013.
Changing the rear gears in your 9in could be an easier way to increase your mpgs.
Thank you for the reply. This is all about the "cool" factor of having a semi-automatic overdrive with a passing gear. I purchased truck with the WB color and the T86 OD warranty plate with this in mind. The wiring and lock out cable are in place. I have a 3.00 rear end so the mileage is not even an issue at the moment. In fact I will need a 3.54 or 3.89 rear end after the transmission is installed.
I am also prepared to spend the time and money needed to put together a reliable OD. The solenoids have been repo at ~$300 or I should be able to find a auto electric shop to rebuild one. The gears and seals will be tougher. I have already spent an embarrassing amount of money on the truck so my wife should not miss another $2,000.
As a guy who bought a complete from shift cable to drive shaft T85 OD tranny from 71'F100, I would look at doing something else.
The lying sack of sh%t that swore up and down that the tranny was quite and shifted smooth but would not let me remove the side cover. Fast forward 4 months and I was getting ready to install it and I thought I better inspect it found 9 teeth missing from the cluster and reverse gears. I have been searching for months and nothing for parts. The first gears get hammered because they are non-syncro.
So just beware.

Just happen to have a nice cluster gear and first reverse laying around..........
T86N in a car application will be a 23 spline input shaft. The shaft will also be about 1/2" short for the pilot shaft if using a truck bell housing.
Should still be the truck bell in there unless it has been converted to side mounts.

It still has the truck engine mounts up front. I will look at the back mounts when I get in from work on Friday. Here is a picture of the tyranny, it does not show the bell housing. I NumberDummy indicated in came from a Galaxies 500 or F100. I assume the unattached rear mount meant it was from a Galaxie. Would it also have a shorter shaft or did they use a shorter bell housing with the T86N to compensate for the longer tranny?
Pulled the same trans you have pictured out of 63 F100 i parted, This was done to rid the truck of the carrier bearing on a long bed and use a single drive shaft.
The truck bells for 223/262 or the 292 are all the same depth for three speeds. about 5/8 in deeper than a car bell.

Thanks for the offer but I already started collecting parts for installing a AOD.
Maybe someone needs my tranny and your gears.
I had the same issues with a supposedly good trans, Scrounged up the parts to fix it and the project customers project stalled. I even have a spare R11 on the shelf.

Do you have complete T86 with OD you would be willing to part with?>

I have been collecting parts for the same OD conversion in my 1956 F100 with a 223. I have found a T85/R11, a T86/R10 and a toploader. I will likely have a spare T86 left over (car version). I live by TMS just South of
Denton and travel to San Antonio several times a year.
