In my opinion any dealer mechanic who is told that you're blowing white smoke that smells like fuel and then suggests an EGR cooler leak knows nothing about diesels... I'd get a second opinion on that from the guys here, and also from an independent diesel mechanic in your area. Google "diesel mechanic" along with your city/state and you'll probably get lots of options. Call several of them until you find one familiar with the Ford 6.0L.
yea im hoping the diesel mech i mentioned in a earlier post has the stuff to check it out
he is highly recomended but i havent been able to get hold of him the last couple days
ill keep yall posted and thanks for all your help
i have not been driving it
i have been worried about causing more problems
am i safe driving it ?
also i put the egr valve back in today and started it
it does smoke way worse on cold mornings
so i talked to this mechanic today that i mentioned early on and he still feels its the egr cooler
he wants me to bring it to him then he will remove egr valve and jack up back of truck.put pressure on i assume the coolant and come back the next day
he says it will show fluid in the cooler if its leaking
this all sounds right to me if i explained it right to you all
well as long as whoever does it is Honest you will be fine
Not one of those that come back and say well we have the egr cooler repair done and found an injector that bad to do you want us to go ahead and do the injector too??
However the test he wants to do sounds good even a Exhaust gas test strip at this point

I follow the thinking on the test. Should work, I just never heard of anyone going to that much trouble. Normally a large enough leak to smoke at the tail pipe leaves the intake wet enough to make the call.
Yes, it could.
Thinking more about the test you described, it would be important to limit the pressure applied to the coolant system. It relieves it's self at 16psi or so. Accidentally putting much more to it could pop the cooler even if it was ok to start with.
Hey y'all kinda off subject but I was wondering what y'all thought of I 6.0. I'm look to buy one at my local dealership and it seems to be a good deal to me but I've been warned to stay away from that engine any thoughts?

There's a couple of recent threads on your question. Probably best to read those and then start a new thread with any of your specific questions.
