ive got a freshly built 429 in my 87 ford f350 4x4 i believe its a 1973 model which has the horrible d3ve heads.. i was wondering if the later 94 and newer 460 heads would be better or the old style '71 and older heads?
If you plan to keep it carb'd and use the carb style intake and exhaust manifold/header, you'll want to stick with the pre '87 carb'd heads. The intake and exhaust ports are in different positions on the EFI heads so they are not compatible with the earlier 460 top end.
If you want to go EFI, there are the '87-91 E7TE heads, and the '92-96/97 F3TE heads. From what I've learned from Mad Porter at 460ford.com, The E7TE heads have better flow potential when ported due to larger intake ports, but the F3TE heads are optimized for better swirl and a better quench area.
