Can anyone confirm if I can just swap nose cones on the starter motor I have? I have a starter for a manual (short nose) and need one for a C4 (long nose cone). Not sure if the armature shaft is longer, or if the housing is just shaped differently.
I know I should just buy a new one, but I am just trying to see if the engine that came in my truck will run or if I have to do a complete rebuild or swap. Should be able to get a nose cone from a local yard cheap if it will work.
You can get shims at NAPA, about 1/4 " thick, i used one once just so i could use a new starter that was for an automatic on a standard set up. Saved me from buying another new starter and having to let it just lay around. It was a 289 engine.
OOps, i read your post wrong, i see you need to go the other way, can't help on that other than searching for another starter. Sorry.

Thanks for the help. Thought that might be the case, but thought I would check. Uh huh...
When you get your C4 starter, measure the two armatures. I'll betcha they'll be the same length since the parts catalog lists the same DOAZ-11005-A armature for both 1963/68 289 A/T & M/T.
How many mechanics in today's world would know about armature lengths for an engine last used in 1968? How many would have Ford parts catalogs?
