I get about 10-12 mpg with my 93 F-250 4X4 5 speed manual. I dont buy trucks for gas milage. I have a 1990 F-250 4X2 with 300-6 that gets 13 mpg max. I will take the 460 anyday. Whats a mile or two!
I have seen some other posts where people are concerned with milage. Let me vent a little about the diesel I owned for 10 years. Besides being so loud in the cab you have to put thestereo up to 32 to even hear it and then when you shut it off the stereo is so loud it hurts your ears ought to give you an idea how uncomfortable it is to drive. As far as power it will do about 26-31 mph on the hills with a trailer. It will barely run the speed limit in a good head wind running wide open. The fuel cost more than unleaded regular and at 12 mpg city and 8 on the hiway towing is was no money saver on fuel. Plus the $16 a bottle of fuel conditioner every few tanks. Add to that it used 3-6 quarts of oil every 3000 miles depending on how it was used. Hi rpm made it drink oil. In the winter the glow plugs would only last a month or so and the dealership always insisted on changing them all. That cost over $200 The water pumps cost between 95 and 280 depending where your at in the country when they go out. Add another $300 labor to change it. Over ten years I averaged over $2000 a year in maitanence costs. One time it was $2400 in one visit to Tower Ford. No thanks on the diesel ever again. What a POS! If my new 460 only gets 6 mpg it will be a bargain.
I have an "83 f250 with the 460 engine, i'm getting like 9 miles a gallon. I was wondering if it would make a big difference if i put in a K&N air filter and those split or triple fire spark plugs ?
I dont think split fire plugs have been shown to have any benefits. An air filter probably wouldnt make any difference as long as it isnt plugged. You should always tune the carb with the air filter on. I wouldnt waste any money on a K&N Filter or split fire plugs. The added cost alone would take along time to pay off than just sticking stock componants back in. You can buy alot of gas with the money you will save.
I put the K&N on my truck and noticed the the truck could breathe better more so than with a new oem filter. The engine could get a higher rpm much quicker after the k&N. I'm not sold on the whole package from them, just the oem style filter helped on my truck. Any improvement you can make to get the air in easier and out easier is going to equate to less srtess on the motor and more power at the wheels. if you have more available power then you should be able to get your foot out of the throttle a little quicker which should help with the mileage at least a little bit.
