DP Tuner options

I was thinking about getting the DP tuner and 4" exhaust, possibly 80 economy mode and maybe the 120 or the 140 for the fun times and maybe track once or twice, while I'm still trying to read up more on it, where is the cheapest, best place to get them?

What is the difference between the 80 economy and 80 tow? Shifting points? I only tow regular cars and light SUVs would a tow 80 benefit me or 80 Econ will be just fine?

I was thinking of buying an SCT programmer and buy 2 or 3 custom tunes to have on it. Disadvantage is ill have to pull over to switch tunes, but is a bit cheaper to do that route, not sure which way to go yet ...

Thanks Nick!

Pricing from our resellers is the same as our pricing. Where are you located? I might be able to set you up with someone local to you.

Here are links via our knowledge base to help with describing the differences between the tunes.

Nick,

you already have the link, your best bet is to go to the link, make a list, then ask here on the forum.

I say this because of your questions with 80e, 80t. Stock, 40t, 60t, 80t, all are set up for different weights. Can not tell you this for sure, but shifting is the same for all, but fuel delievery may be different, the intention is to keep temps down.

120 is race, 140 is smoke (just a fun tune)

80e, then 60e. Jody really pushes the 60e, he is very proud of that tune. But after I spoke to him about my driving, he suggested 80e for the city, 60e for the highway. Dianne, a while back, use to get he best milage out of 80t ( i think, thats was what it was) for her city driving.

Have fun

The shift points between the economy tune and tow tune are different. The tow tunes hold out longer for better pulling..My economy (60&80e)tunes shift into overdrive at appx 44 mph,tow tunes at appx 50+..
Also the 80 tow (IMO) is great..I am towing a 10,000 camper and have no EGT issues, even in the mountains..

120 and 140 as your first selection? It sounds like you want to go fast... but it takes more than a tuner to fully unleash the beast. You will like the 60e or 80e, there have been many OMG posts from these alone. Tuning removes a lot of the built-in "caging" of the beast, so it's possible to run overly-hot EGTs or transmission temperatures. You really want gauges to let you know when you've "stepped" over a line. EGT, Transmission temp, and Boost gauges have really helped many of us. My own next gauge will be fuel pressure. The tuner will work best if you have no exhaust leaks, boost leaks, or any other running issues. If you feel the truck is gutless you want a tuner to compensate, beware. If your truck is running fine and you just want more pep - the economy tunes will get your undivided attention and keep you and your wallet in the same state as your attention.

Doing more reading and learning. I would like better mpg and more power as we all do. 80E is probably my first option. 120 might also be on the list, 120 would rarely be used, but I'd like one for the fun days. Might even get a 80T if money permits, but I'm sure 80E will plenty enough for towing 7-8K weight.

I'd like the F6 so I can shift on the fly but does anyone used SCT programmers with custom tunes, or is there a reason most go for the chip instead?

Only mods I want to have is the intake 4" exhaust and a tune, plus gauges.

I'll be cleaning engine bay soon, checking all pipes and leaks etc, making it all top notch before doing any further upgrades.

The economy tunes heat up your EGTs when you tow... you're better off using stock for towing, or get a tow tune.

F5 and F6 shift on the fly, but F6 allows you to receive emailed tunes as you can afford them. My truck has been custom since before I bought the chip and this has helped me to fine-tune the tunes by email. I had issues with my first set of tunes (the shifts were too firm with my HD4R100) and receiving the corrections by email saved me from pulling the chip to send it in.

Programmers are not shift-on-the-fly, and many of the mass-marketed products are not true "tuners". They perform their function by masking sensor readings and lying to the PCM, tricking it to give more power - but in an uncontrolled or imbalanced way. I don't subscribe to this method, so a product with this "attitude" would never have seen my money or my truck.

Scenarios I face on any given day: Coming down a steep grade in 60e, I switch to Decel tune to prevent the need for braking - then back to 60e at the bottom of the grade. Driving on dry road with 60e, then reaching a stretch of road with compact snow and ice - I switch to Stock tune for a gentler throttle control. Cruising at 60e on the highway and happen upon a ricer that thinks he's all that - pop into performance mode and remind him he's not. That last one has happened to me on few occasions, but it does happen.

I upgraded my injectors and turbo recently, so all my tunes needed to be completely overhauled - yea F6! I had all my tunes at the ready the day after I ordered everything - 5 days before the injectors arrived. I bought the sticks through DP Tuner, so the modified tunes (and subsequent refinements) were included in the purchase price. F5 is for now, but F6 is for what's next.

Definitely do not plan on towing 7,000-8,000 lbs with the 80E tune. Spend the little extra for the towing tune. In my opinion you shouldn't be towing more than 3 or 4,000 lbs in 80e. It is worth it. It raises the shift points to carry each gear longer, as well as locks the torque converter to allow engine braking on decel. Both are awesome features. I use the 80t tune in the mountains just for the engine braking feature and a little more security with EGTs (even though I don't have an EGT gauge yet, I know, I know). If anything bag the 120 and get the 80e and 80t tunes. You won't be disappointed with that combo.

Also, the SCT and flash programmers suck because: 1) It is a PITA and 5 or 10 minute process of playing with the key stopped somewhere to change tunes. I have one in my Mustang. 2) It is a PITA and 5 or 10 minute process of playing with the key stopped somewhere to change tunes. 3) It is a PITA and 5 or 10 minute process of playing with the key stopped somewhere to change tunes.

Seriously, with a selectable chip you can change tunes going down the road. If you have been driving around in your 80e and are hooking up to a trailer and need to go to your towing tune, would you rather flip to 80t, put it in drive and go, or would you rather shut the truck off, put ignition in run position, clear economy program, cycle key for X seconds, put ignition in run position, download tow tune (5 or 10 minute process), start, go.

It's a no brainer.

If your not dead set on dp tunes... there is a spiffy new chip with the same digital selector and readout for what tune you are in that dp does... but it doesnt lock you in to tunes from only one programmer. Dont get me wrong... im not knocking dp. There are just a whole lot of other programmers out there with, from what my ocd about Motorbug has lead me to read...
Equally great tunes.

From all the reading, and questions, and learning that the guys have beat into my diesel numb skull... the best bang for your buck is with the new hydra chip from php. It comes with all the toony goodness of their database of programs fitting your vehicles capabilities/mods, included in the purchase price. With the hydra you also have the option of an expansion usb cable/mounted port, so you can switch, swap, reorganize tunes without having to remove the chip. Ever. With this port you can stuff into this marvelous chip... the tunes from ANY other programmers who can produce a binary file apparently. Or you can download some tuning software and dance with the devil by tuning yourself.

IMO, with basically a stock truck I would stay away from the 120 and 140..
The 100 performance is as much as the injectors and HPOP will want to handle.. If possible, i would suggest stock,60 or 80tow,60 or 80 economy and 100 performance.. If I am correct, the stock tune is free, so that only 3 tunes to purchase..

Lets talk about tuner options..The Hydra, well looks good to me,capable of loading several tuners tunes.I was looking at pulling the trigger and giving it a try (always have ran DP),just to see what everyone is talking about..How long before tuners stop e-mailing tunes or fix it where you have to get the chip from them.Just like DP..

F6 Smartchip

*Made in the USA

*Holds up to 15 switch on the fly programs and 1 lock out mode.
*21 different switch styles to select from. Our gauge style switcher helps you match to already installed gauges.
*2 switch cable lengths for mounting the switchers conveniently in your desired location.
*Free Software and Utility downloads that do not require you to be connected to the internet.
*100% Compatible with PATS. Does not require disabling the factory theft system .
*Try, then buy trial tunes for 10 key cycles.

We do not allow other tuners tunes on our F5 and F6 chips due to support issues we've had in the past. It's no different than Banks not allowing Diablo to program their hardware.

The F8 is available if you desire a different tuner to program your truck. We left it open source just for this reason.

If at all possible I think what you should do is see if you can find someone in your area who has a DP tuner.... With the right supporting mods and is knowledgable (I cant spell) that you can talkto first hand and in person. Most guys here would meet uop with another brother any time, I would and I have and it woked out great... Ive never once heard of a bad meeting. If you look in the upper right hand corner of our post you can see where most of us are from, those who filled that in in their CP.
For example JUSTANOTHERTRUCK is only about an hour and a half from me.

A 5 min ride and a good conversation I believe you would be sold

Thank you guys, would live to meet up when possible but with night shifts it's hard to do anything but sleep eat work lol ... 11 month old is the other project haha

Is there a reason some of you guys choose 80E/T or 60E/T ? Better mpg on 60E/T yet still good HP gains?

Also with 100 performance is it really worth it if you already have the 80E and 80T?

Once I'm settled with all of this and I go to the track with a 100 performance set, 4" exhaust, 6637 filter, no cat, what can the truck run possibly? (It ran 18.6 all stock)
