Holley 4160 Questions
I did lotsa research, and talked with my mechanic (who knows a lot about FE's). I long ago decided that I want to go with a Holley 4160 4V 600 CFM for my '71 Pick Up w/360.
Dave (mechanic) said that I definitely should get one with vacuum secondaries and an electric choke - also the "Ford Kickdown".
Okay....as many of you know, there are several different styles of Holley 4160's. I want to be certain I get the right one. My plan is to buy one that is used, and in good condition, and do a rebuild on it.
A friend has one that I can get pretty cheap. It definitely has the electric choke and vacuum secondaries, but how do I know if it has the Ford Kickdown? And, what the heck is a Ford Kickdown? (Gosh, I hope that's not blasphemous talk on here!).
The guy with the carb wrote me, and said, "The arm behind the throttle linkage is the ford kickdown, right?"
Is that correct?
The specific model number on this 4160 is: 80457 - 5.
Has anyone heard of this model? What can you tell me about it? Is this what I'm looking for?
Thanks,
Bob
I'm also looking at a 4160 that is a model # 1850 - 3. It has a manual choke, and am unsure if it has the Ford Kickdown - I'm looking into it, though. It is referred to as a "Rat Rod". Does that mean that model is more high performance? Any info would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Bob
I cant tell you the actual Holley part number for it. The 1850 is the list number and the dash number after is the revision. "Rat rod" is a nickname that is over used these
days. It means nothing about the carb.

I'll check that option out. By the way - I see you have Flotech Headers. Were they a pain to install on that 68. I'm looking into a set for my 71 F100 Ranger XLT. What model did you use? I wonder if it's the same as mine?

my truck is an automatic , i'd go with the shortys if i had to do it over again
If anyone knows if any differences - please advise:
I talked with my mechanic again - he said that either an electric choke or manual choke would be fine for my Holley 4160.
So......I'm looking at models:
1850-2
1850-3
1850-4
1850S
This is a bit confusing. I understand that the 1850-4 is a later revision of the 1850-3. But, I need to know what an 1850S is. The differences may be minimal, but I wanna know before I plop my money down. I just want a strong, solid carb - not for racing.
Thanks,
Bob
