ABS light / braking problems
Looking for some advice on my brakes:
2004 F-150 SuperCrew Lariat / 5.4L
135 k miles
What started out as an intermittent ABS light has turned into about a 90% of the time illumination over the past few weeks. About 10% of the time, the ABS light does not illuminate after engine start up, only to come on anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes later. Other times, the light will go off after driving for a few minutes only to come on while driving - no rhyme or reason.
* With the ABS light on, braking sensation through the pedal feels normal. I do notice however, that it sometimes feels like my front brakes are dragging (feels like brakes are partially applied while driving, rotors - sometimes left, sometimes right, sometimes both are hot to the touch after minimal braking). I have changed the front caliper and brake hardware (brake slippers, caliper boots and bolts, etc. as I'm pretty sure that the brakes were not retracting away from the rotor). Sometimes, this will fix the brake dragging and ABS light problem - only for a few days....
* when the ABS light is out, applying the brakes results in a feeling like the pedal is "catching" or "ratcheting" - kind of hard to explain, but it certainly does not feel right - almost a "spongy" feeling.
Anyway, apologies for the long post but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. From the looks of things, it appears that this forum has more than a few knowledgeable and helpful people who are willing to share opinions and experiences, any of which would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
Pat
