I just repalced the Hubs,Rotors and Calibers on my 95 Bronco. As I was comming up to a stop sign I applied the brakes in a calm mannor.
The brake peddle locked up. It was right at the top and like stepping on a rock. I heard what sounded like a motor trying to work and had a vibration in the brake peddle. I almost didn't stop. I let off of the brakes and reapplied them. They work fine but the ABS light came on.
When I start the truck up the ABS light will come on then go off like it did before. But comes on after a short time and the same thing happens like at the stop sign. After the light comes on the brakes work fine just no ABS action.
Any Ideas on what could be the problem. I would be greatful for any help
There is a "Speed ring" on the backside of the caliper assembly and a sensor that monitors the ring. If the sensor got knocked out of place or damaged it can cause problems like you are getting. Pull the wheel and ckeck it out to make sure it is lined up, not hitting on the ring, connected to the wiring harness...etc.
mine does the same thing but I think the guy before me took the stuff off because it was old and he didnt want to pay for it to get fixed. but mine is a 87 the breaks work fine ai just dont have abs but the light comes on a little after I start driving.
It could be that, that would be nice if it was. On mine I had to replace the ABS valve that is located on the front driver's side frame rail. It was making the front brakes drag for one thing, and the ABS light always came on if I let the truck idle for 10-15 minutes in hot weather but I am not sure what that meant. The red light would come on as well. By the time I found the problem the ABS light and the red brake light were on almost all the time, and I was warping rotors from the drag of the calipers. All fixed now but that valve is not cheap.
But you probably do not have that problem as it only started after your brake job so the ring may have gotten lost or damaged during the intallation.
It would be kind of tough to loose the ring...its not much smaller then the diameter of the rotor. Let us know what you find out.
You said that the speed ring is not much smaller than the rotor, and also that it is on the back of the caliper? How can that be? I've done my brakes and I do not recall ever seeing anything out of the ordinary - just the rotor, caliper, and pads.
Maybe I don't have the ring, since I have a 1990 and it only has ABS on the rear wheels?
