Hey guy's, since I posted last week I found out that this 302 was probably de-tuned for smog reasons and where the original 210 horse motor came with 9.1 pistons when de-tuned the droped down to 8:5.1. along Im sure with timing down grades. This has left me with the 140 hp.
As Ive mentioned I purchased the Edelbrock 600 series 4 barrel and RPM manifold and a comp cam which resulted in only a minor increase of horsepower. So even with better breathing heads and headers I don't believe I will even get close to 300 hp. Please, comments will be appreciated. bill
If you had your heads off to upgrade them you could change pistons and rods if you like by just dropping the pan for access. You could even go 9.5.1. And if you recall the other thread somone recomended changing the timeing gear for the timeing issue and someone the distributer for timeing curve. (I have and like the HEI) Im the one that ISN'T a mechanic, so hopefully some one will chime in that is.
I suspect you may have a little too much carb and intake and possibly cam for the rest of the motor. Many times more can be too much. I've always been one to call the various vendor's customer service for recommendations on the best combo rather than just picking individual parts out of the catalogs. Has the engine ignition and carb been dyno tuned by someone who knows what he's doing?
When you made all the changes did you re-curve the distributor? A lot of people don't bother changing the mechanical advance or adjusting the vacuum advance. And then they are disappointed in the out come.
The distributor needs tuning just like a carb does.
Did you do any tuning to the carb or just bolt it on?
You can't just throw parts at the engine and expect it to perform. Right now you've got low compression, stock heads? and stock exhaust manifolds? If that is the case then better heads and some headers should make a big difference.
You have a good block and crank re build it. In the early70s I put 10 :1 forged high rise pistons a 310 duration cam oversized heads a holly 4 barrel ecklind distributor ported all of the exhaust and built an 11 quart oil pan in it. We thought it was pushing 325 or so horse but others said it was a lot more than that. Never did Dino it as didn't have any dollars put it in a 60 Austin Healy and eat corvettes up all the time. I had few $ in it as the guy that helped me build it father was a vp at Napa. But these are good blocks to build there are a ton of ways to do but pay attention to what Ax said it needs balance to work. Dave s
Ok, thanks for the imput. I guess I'll start over again. My old pappy use to say " there's never enough time to do something right but always enough time to do it over again".

If you give me all your specs, I will put them in my DeskTop Dyno program and see where you are at horsepower wise.
