2004 f250 running rough

My fathers 2004 f250 6.0 diesel has been running rough upon startup. It needs to be warmed up for about 5 minutes in 40 degree weather and it geting worse mpg than usual. Im not used to the 6.0 and he is a meat cutter not a mechanic so any help would be appreciated.

Hi Ford Junkie,

I'm going to move this one down to the 6.0L forum, the folks down there should be better able to help you out!

We are not getting any codes from the engine and no check engine light is on. In the morning we start it up and it runs realy rough and dies out several times. After it warms up it runs just fine rest of the day. We used to get about 16 mpg on it but now were getting 12-13. I will try to get an video of it in the morning.

No recent work has been done on it exept an oil change at the dealership. It did have its seals replaced around a year ago and the belt has been replaced about 6 months ago because an squirrel decideded that it would be fun to chew on. Then got sucked into the belt and got chopped up.

15W40, cold mornings and 6.0 engines do not get along very well.

Although I would be somewhat surprised if a Ford dealer used 15W40, could happen.

24 F this morning in northern Utah and the truck started fine and idled fine, running motorcraft 15W40 synthetic blend. That was after having the block heater plugged in for an hour and a half and ECT was 72

For what it's worth though I do intend on either running the motorcraft 10W30 or a 5W40 synthetic. Winter came just a little to quick for me this year.

Ford Junki so you do have some gauges , I'm not shur of your year of truck so Benny or Bizmic and a lot of other guys would be the one to let you know whats up and to really check out , one thing you could do and it's real easy to do , Check these sensors
1. ICP and connection
2. Map connection and hose to egr cooler
3. EBP and hose
the little harder one is
4. IPR and look at the screen
I am only commenting on these sensors because of well 1 reading almost all pages of FTE TECH pages and 2 I had a surge Issue and Bennys advise, also amsdriven, bizmic, I could go on . I dont want to give you the wrong Info, but those 4 would be a great start what scan gauge do you have?

Having the codes read (maybe an autoparts store would do it for you) would be a big help. Post up code numbers on any you might have (remember - you do not have to have a CEL to have codes).

Also, IMO, knowing that you have a healthy set of batteries (both charged and then properly load tested) and a healthy alternator is an important beginning to troubleshooting. I would hope the dealership (assume it was a Ford dealership) added the proper oil, but who knows. Can you verify the type of oil? Quite frankly 40 degree weather shouldn't even require glow plug operation to start.

After that, I would be checking the FICM voltage. One trick that Ed at FICMrepair, com mentions is to heat up the FICM w/ a hair dryer to see if temperature is playing a role with it being flakey.

The gauges that 04badford mentions is GREAT advice. We really do need to know more to help.

Oh - also .........

Any mods on his truck?
No recent work other than the oil change (say within the last 6 months)?
Any smoke on start-up?
What is the oil change history - type of oil and how long does he usually go between changes, also what filters are typically used?

But he mentioned the truck started running like crap AFTER an oil change.

15W40 was just an idea.
