E4OD electrical problem

Hi all helpful people!

I have a problem with my truck.. It's a 1991 F350 7.3 4x4..

When I drive around with the light switch off.. it works just fine.. as a dream.. But when I turn the lights on, pull the switch to the first click (or the 2nd) it's like the gear jumps out.. and does not really jump in again until I push the throttle.. This is noticable when I'm driving 50-60mph

If anyone have had this problem I would greatly appreciate you sharing your story

Do I dare to drive around or should I be afraid of getting damage to the gearbox?

Check/clean the grounds on the radiator support (driver side) then for giggles and grins do the same for the grounds near the starter relay/battery on the passenger side.

I have seen poor grounds cause transmission and driveability problems when the headlights were on more than once.

That's interesting.. that thought never occurred to me.. should it not be hard to start if the ground was bad?

That's a good question about the ground. Can someone chime in on that. I'm questioning that in my 94

No, these grounds (G100 and G101) are for the PCM, transmission, lights, and other chassis grounds. A bad ground leading to the engine (G106) would make the truck hard to start.

The Transmission Electronic Control Assembly (TECA) is tied to ground G100 on a diesel truck along with the headlamps, marker lamps, etc.

A bad ground for a tail/brake light could be letting power back feed to the brake light circuit through the bulb from the tail light circuit and cause the torque converter to unlock..

All it takes is a tap of the brake pedal enough to light the brake lights to drop the lock-up converter..

So I think we've established that it's most probably a problem with the ground!? Where do I find the ground to the tail and brake lights then?

G106 is the ground leading from the negative side of the battery to the engine block. It may also have a tie-in to the frame along the way. Diesels have two batteries so the path may be slightly different.

G100: Located on the radiator support (driver side).

The drawing above does not show the second battery for your diesel, but the ground should be in the same place as far as I can tell.
