Diesel Mod prices

I should clarify.
Went to see a local diesel guy ( VERY Experienced, great reputation ).
Asked about some of the commonly done mods to help improve the longevity of the engine(egr delete, coolant filter, etc) and also asked about enhancing power.
He basically said that there was so much cost involved in doing the mods that it wouldnt be worth it until you had to pull the engine or do something major. He reccomended getting a tuner and cutting off the cat and then just going with it until something had to be done.
05 has 155K on it now
I know doing new gaskets, studs and even the oil cooler are pretty pricey but wondered about egr delete and other basics
