My adventure this past week with the hoist at the rustproofing place not being able to lift my X has got me thinking about replacement jacks for at home.
I currently have a 2.25T jack that struggled with my windstar and 2T jack stands. I'm looking for advice on what jack to buy. I can get a Michelin 3T locally for $120, a no name 3T for $110, or a Torin 3T for $350. Will 3T jack stands be ok or should I get 6T.
I use my 12000lb rhino ramps most of the time but with my pending spring replacement I'm going to want a jack. What are you all using?

Most of the time a jack stand holds only one corner of the vehicle. The Excursion weighs ~8,000 give or take a little. That's 4 tons. Divide that out among 4 corners and you need 1 ton jack stands so 2 tons jack stands should be fine.
The same should apply to your jack. Even if you're lifting one whole end or the other, it is still only about 4,000 lbs. A GOOD 2 ton lift should get the job done and should lift just one wheel at a time with no problem.
I like having jack stands that have at minimum a capacity per pair of two - three times half the vehicle weight.
I typically end up with a higher ratio though because to get the desired maximum height usually requires using a 6 or 12 ton set.
Keep in mind some jack stand capacities are per jack stand and some are per pair.
Unfotunately, getting 2 or 4 ton jackstands high enough to hold at the frame is a issue.
I ended up getting 6 ton stands at first, and they work fine for most work on my ex.
I did buy 2 of the 12 ton stands for special heiight occasions.
The 3 ton jack stands in the garage are reserved for regular cars or holding axles.
I kinda like the idea of 6 ton jacks anyway. I have had a car fall on me before off of jacks, and it is no fun.
Here is another thread about jack stands and my reply of why I like them strong and overkill.
You can use them as edging for your flower beds/shrubs until you need
them!!!
ya you can run them down the side of the driveway like i do. kids always want to sit on them tho and they get the black sticky tar crap al over their pants.
I carry a 3ton floor jack in my truck at all times. Its come in handy when a loaded trailer has a flat. Not to mention the previous owner sold the truck with out the scissor jack....
