Zf5 swap

Hey guys so I got a 2wd zf5 that I'm going to put on my truck in place of the e4od my truck is 4x4 and of course I want to keep it 4x4 so I know I've got to replace the tail housing do I have to replace the output shaft on the zf5 or is there a shaft that comes from the tcase into the back through the housing? I've never separated a tcase from a tranny before any advice is appreciated

Honestly, you would be better off finding a 4x4 ZF. If you have never had a ZF apart, you may have trouble getting it back together. The rear extension housings aren't cheap either.

The out put shaft will have to be changed like you mentioned. The thing about the ZFs is, they are rear loaded trans missions. Everything in the transmission is connected to the rear extension housing. It all has to come out, the shaft changed, then put back on the rear housing, and loaded back into the case. It's not as simple as just changing the rear housing.

You'll need one from a 4x4 or a f-super duty with parking brake built onto it.
