zf 5 speed

my question is i bought a 90 2wd f250 diesel and the ears off the tail shaft housing that bolt to the transmission mount are broke. somehow they cracked and broke apart. i was thinking about tig welding them back together or maybe get a new housing. I know how hard these trannys are supposivly to rebuild, but maybe that housing would come off easy and i could just replace it and be done with it. if not i can probably weld it up and maybe make some kind of support bracket so it won't ever break again. what do you all think. is this cracking of the mount ears common?

Very carefully check all around the area that would be a bell housing.
Usually in the area where the bell housing and a transmission would join together.
The cases are known to crack in that area.

A crack in the front would mean the ears were the only thing holding the transmission from rotating.
That is about the only way I could see for the ears to get broken.

I could see the rear tranny mounting ears getting broken off if it were dropped on them. Swapping the rear housing is not a simple proposition with the ZF. When you pull the housing off the main body of the tranny the entire gearset slides out with it. Then you have to transfer all the internal parts over to the new rear casing. Pretty much an entire rebuild.

You could try tig welding the ears back on, but I woldn't count on them alone after having been broken off. I think I'd fabricate some additional bracketry or even a hoop out of steel to go around the whole rear casing to reinforce it.

Either that or buy another ZF....

ya the hoop is a thought. i wont buy another zf if i have to buy anything ill buy a e40d or a c6. i was never a big zf fan but i got the truck for 800 bucks and it only has 99k orignal miles on it. it was a farm truck so its been beat, but it runs really good just needs some work. it also had a new dual mass clutch put back into it the guy said 1000 and knowing how much they cost im not going to doubt him

Yeah, a grand for a either new or rebuilt DMF sounds about right.
I wouldn't go with the E40D. I've heard too many horror stories, and if your truck never had one, you'll need a crapload of electronics. If it were me, I'd stick with the ZF with the new clutch setup the PO put in it - or else go to a C6 and start looking for a good used OD unit to bolt onto it....
