What?

Set the motor to TDC, put the dizzy in and point the rotor to the # 1 cylinder and adjust the timing from there.

Edit: if your trying to determine if you have a steel or cast gear on the dizzy try sticking a magnet to it. The magnet will stick to steel, not cast.

I know how to time the engine, I was rebuilding my dizzy and the plastic bushings for the weights broke, can't find them anywhere. Need to buy a whole new dizzy and was trying to figure out which gear I have before I went to the parts house. Been a long time since I worked on an older engine. Thanks for the input.. BB

You may know how to time an engine but your initial post was very difficult to understand.

Ok, it's a cast iron gear but is magnetic. I took an awe and scratched it, it's not shiny like a steel gear would be... BB

There are no billit steel gears, they were all cast.

Nobody said billit gears, all parts manuals specify steel or cast gears as they do not interchange. Both were available for the '75 model year. As for shiny I should have said glossy, the steel gear is dark in color but smooth instead of rough looking like cast. After cleaning my gear and comparing it with both at the parts store, it matched the cast gear. As for the magnetic part, a magnet sticks to both. Thanks for the help. BB

not to be rude sir, but your quite wrong about the magnetic part, a magnet will in no way shape or form be attracted to cast iron...

I beg to differ. Iron is a ferromagnetic material. A magnet will be attracted to it, regardless of the method of forming.

Once again, i beg to differ. I don't have my truck with me, but i've got my cast iron skillet..

It's iron, it's ferromagnetic, a magnet sticks to it. I can do the same thing with my cast iron skeet thrower.

You need to go back to science class there, bud.

Hey look. It's a cast iron block on a stand and there's a magnet stuck to it.

Sorry to be sarcastic but you're way off. Magnets stick to ferrous metals. Ferrous means that they are derived from the element Iron with the symbol Fe which comes from the Latin word ferrum, meaning iron. The reason they stick to steel is because it is made mostly of iron with some carbon added.
