Could my clutch fan be going bad? Is that possible?
Reason I ask is it was on today when I dont think it should have been.
I parked my truck at 4:00am before work, and it sat all day until I got off work at 8:30pm when I went home. It didnt move all day and when I started it ambient temp was about 55-60* but the fan was on anyway. Only for a few blocks out of the neighborhood but it has me wondering, is that normal?
I have noticed this in the day before that if the truck has been sitting for a while it will be engaged for about a minute then disengage, but never in the cold.
So, normal? Cause for concern? Abnormal but nothing to worry about?
Had the same experiences as Larry, just while towing on extended climbs will the fan clutch kick on.
What I don't know is that if the clutch goes, does it default to "engaged" as a safety measure? Maybe someone with more information can comment on that. I know on the large diesels I used to work on in the Army, the fan clutch would fail to "push fan into radiator" which was less helpful...
Relax, it does that every now and again. My truck does the same thing and has done it since new. You let it sit, after a long day fire it up and head home, and you may hear the clutch fan for no reason, then quiet itself down. Nothing to worry about...
Mine does it also. My theory is that the mechanical part that reacts to heat trips when it sits in the hot engine bay after shut down. When you start it up it still thinks its hot for a few min/sec until it senses the cooler temp. Im here in Texas and it does it alot. My theory may be wrong so dont take my word for it
I think mine is kind of goofy also. Seems to come on even when it's 40-50's out. Temp gauge stays very still, so I guess it's doing what it should, just wish it would do it quieter!
I don't mind it being loud. Sounds like a jet!
Just wanted to make sure it was a okay because someone once mentioned that a vs clutch fan could cause premature water pump failure and I didn't want to leave it on there if its going bad.

What could be more premature than the problems you've already had .
On that note, did you ever figure out what the deal was with your pumps?

First pump I think was just a normal bearing failure. The fins appeared to be rubbing the pump, and I think that caused the pump to fail. I have reason to believe that it may not have been the factory pump, but have no proof, just little things in the cooling system that wernt factory; some clamps, the lower radiator hose, etc.
The second was my fault. After blowing a coolant hose in the desert I refilled with bottled water to get me home and let it stay in too long (2-3 weeks) and that caused the pump to rust and fail.
