I have a 2002 Ranger, 4.0, auto tranny. The CEL and Fuel Cap light came on on the dash and I took it in to be fixed. While they were at it I let them give the Ranger a tune up. The CEL and Fuel Cap light have since returned and I'm also having a difficult time starting the truck when the engine is cold. It starts fine after having warmed up a bit.
I'm going to take it back to the service dept and let them look at it again, but I was wondering if anyone had experienced similar problems and what was done to fix it.
Run this puppy by your favorite autoparts store for a no cost computer trouble code scan & post All trouble code Numbers, as they can provide good trouble shooting clues.
Most Ford Dealers warranty their work, so take it back with your paper work & have them put right what you've paid for.
Maybe have a conversation with the service manager, if it seems they just erased the trouble codes to turn the CEL off, if your paper work doesn't indicate any parts were replaced.
Not tightening the fuel cap until it clicks, can cause a problem that the computer can detect, so maybe they just retightened the gas cap, cleared the CEL with their scan tool & sent you on your way????
SO, have the computer scanned for trouble codes & post All Numbers found & we'll all do some second guessing!!!! lol
They had previously replaced the fuel cap with a new one. I did stop by the dealership the other day and they will look at it again for no charge. I just have to find a good time to drop it off. Mainly I was just wondering what might cause the issue.
If I recall correctly, the fuel system is pressurized. So if it's losing pressure somehow when it's not running, that could result in possibly some air in the lines that the fuel pump pushes out once it's running? I'm not sure.
They didn't include the trouble codes on the receipt. I'll try and swing by Advance and see if they'll read them for me. I did call Ford and arranged to bring it to them Monday morning.
Swung by Advance and the only code is P0455 Evap System Leak. They said it was no big deal and might reduce my already crappy fuel mileage a little. I'd still like it fixed but am not sure how to go about it. I already have a new gas cap.
If the CEL turned on shortly after refueling, check that the gas cap is properly tightened & if so remove it & check its gasket & the sealing surface the gasket contacts for damage.
Also check under hood where the vapor recovery system vacuum hose connects to the intake manafold, to make sure that hose is tightly connected & not dryrotted/soft/split/cracked, ect. Follow the hose back to the charcoal vapor storage canister.
Next up might be the vapor recovery purge valve on the charcoal canister, if its stuck open, it'll try to constantly suck fumes out of the canister, via the fuel tank, which would put too much negative purge pressure on the tank, but if it were acting out like that, you should have had a trouble code for the purge valve, as the computer monitors its actions, but I suppose the vapor recovery canister could have a crack in it, but if it did, seems to me you'd be smelling raw gas fumes.
SO, without more code clues, look for a gross vacuum leak in the vapor recovery system & keep us posted on your trouble shoot.

Thanks. I don't know that I knew anything about such a system. I think I have a Haynes manual around here someplace. I'll have to dig it out to see exactly what you're talking about.
