so i buy an 05 f250 5.4l. have it for a few days and now i get a check fuel cap wanring in the dash display. take the cap off, inspect, put it back on tight .... like 10 times and the warning is still there. any ideas anyone? .... how do you test a fuel cap? i went to the auto parts store to see if there were any codes in her but they couldnt uplink to her, i was thinking perhaps the fuel tank pressure sensor but dont want to start throwing parts at it. i like my lawn tractor it never complanes. thanks ahead for the help
After the code was set, I think you have to drive it thru at least one (maybe more) drive cycle, or reset the CEL with a scantool. Try that before buying ANYTHING.
It has to be re-set, or driven. I had a 04 F150 that did that, it would go out, after being driven. Try cleaning the seal and the surface on the filler neck. If that doesn't do it, you'll need to buy a new cap. The emissions system pulls a vacuum and, thats how it ck's for leaks.
in case this helps someone down the road, i replaced the cap with a motorad locking cap and no more warning ..... problem fixed for under 30 bucks. i like my truck again.
You may want to check the hose clamps on the filler neck, and the quick connects for the charcoal canister. Also inspect the metal on the filler neck, where the seal sits. These would be the first things I would check. The new cap could even be bad. Stant makes the OEM part, you may want to go to the parts store and pick up a non locking cap, and try that.
